Sierra Morena
Ants of Sierra Morena, La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve, Chiapas, Mexico
Report by John T. (Jack) Longino, The Evergreen State College.
This is a working list of the ants of Sierra Morena, Chiapas, Mexico, based on Project LLAMA sampling. Specimen records have been uploaded to the AntWeb database and are periodically updated.
This is a static webpage with links to the AntWeb species pages, where you can see distribution maps on Google Earth. If links are dead, that means the database has changed as hypotheses of species boundaries evolve and names change.
Acropyga
Adelomyrmex JTL011 (cf. tristani, but smaller, shorter dorsal pilosity, erect setae on hind tibia present or absent (always present on tristani), queens smaller with larger shiny spot on mesonotum.)
Adelomyrmex JTL014 (cf. micans, but face sculptured, not shiny.)
Adelomyrmex JTL016 (a single queen, the size of A. robustus queen, but with shorter pilosity and no erect setae on hind tibia.)
Adelomyrmex JTL017 (cf. silvestrii. Pronotal dorsum with smooth spot. Propodeal spines long, upturned. Postpetiole like silvestrii).
Azteca coeruleipennis (a Cecropia ant.)
Azteca xanthochroa (a Cecropia ant.)
Brachymyrmex
Brachymyrmex nebulosus (Previously known from one site in Costa Rica. A single specimen collected as a stray worker. Face is sculptured, in contrast to smooth-faced Costa Rican version.)
Dorymyrmex
Gnamptogenys simulans (The Mexican form of this species is bufonis, a valid species, but I think bufonis is a synonym of simulans.)
Hypoponera
Leptanilloides JTL002 (A wonderful discovery! A new species near L. sculpturata.)
Pachycondyla JTL014 (cf. ferruginea. Other specimens of this morphospecies are from under epiphytes at 1500m elevation on Volcan Barva in Costa Rica.)
Ponera JTL002 (A smaller version of P. pennsylvanica.)
