OK, so you survived the nine months, and your bundle of joy arrives. Except it may not be the Hallmark movie you envisaged.
“Any birth experience can be traumatic,” said Patti who runs a ‘Birth Release Programme’ (check out www.babyjourney.com). Hayley added that caesarean babies who haven’t gone through the process of labour have more chance of having a distressed nervous system.
“This controls every other system in the body, and can lead to Subluxation Complex” said Hayley. “Symptoms include colic, unexplained crying, not latching during breast feeding, reflux, constipation and baby irritable syndrome.” Using an extremely gentle neuro-impulse protocol these can be solved.
The team also offers support during pregnancy. “It’s important to take the right supplements and follow good dietary advice,” added Kerryn (the dietician). “Iron, folic acid, Vitamin C and Omega 3’s are important.” During this time your body experiences physical adjustments, and aches and pains are frequently mis-diagnosed as disc problems or sciatica. Hayley (the chiro) is close by to gently treat ligament and pelvic muscle changes. Patti (hypnobirthing) is there to prepare you mentally, physically and emotionally for a calmer and easier birth.
“We assist with fertility issues as well,” said Patti Good, BodyTalk and Hypnobirthing practitioner and Doula (someone who offers emotional support during birth). “Often infertility is not necessarily a medical problem, and I help by clearing out underlying emotional issues – getting the skeletons out of the closet!” Patti’s records show that she has a 60% success rate, a big leap from 30% from IVF. Hayley Bedell-Sivright, a chiropractor, agreed, saying that sometimes simple structural adjustments can make all the difference. Dietary shifts can also improve your chances and with good food guidance from dietician, Kerryn Gibson, the next thing you know you will be welcoming the pitter patter of little feet.
In fact they go one step back, to when your baby is a just glint in your eye.
In February 2011 the Durban North Children’s Medical Centre opened its doors offering the best therapeutic support for children of all ages under one roof.
Routine screening for hearing can be done as young as a month old. Audiologist Josias Naidoo offers this service. Colette Kell is the resident homeopath, and used to practice at the LIFE Centre and has been heavily involved Fertility for 6 years. Her skill is getting the body back into balance. Samantha Davids has recently joined the practice as the physiotherapist.
The responsibility of bringing a new life into the world can be overwhelming. It is a comfort knowing that this collection of well trained and experienced practitioners can be found under one roof.

As a dietician Kerryn also provides support and counselling for breast-feeding. “Before taking the medical route to solving lack of milk, a mother should consider other simple options, like fluid intake and skin to skin contact. I also give formula and weaning guidance, and nutrition beyond the first couple of months. Fussy eaters can be a result of poor weaning practices. Good nutrition is critical for mental, physical and cognitive development.”
