Avro Type 683 Lancaster: Initial order of four planned prototypes ordered under Contract No.B.135521/40. The first aircraft (BT308) used a Manchester airframe, modified for the installation of four Merlin X engines. The second (DG595) was to be representative of the initial Lancaster Mk.I production model. The third (DT810) had Bristol Hercules VI radial engines installed and became the Lancaster Mk.II prototype airframe. The fourth and final prototype (BT812) was never built

The 19 Avro Lancaster B Mk III (Type 464 Provisioning) bombers used by the RAF's 617 Squadron during Operation Chastise (the Dambusters Raid) in May 1943 each carried unique serial numbers and squadron codes. These aircraft were specifically modified to carry the "Upkeep" bouncing bomb, which involved removing the mid-upper turret and bomb bay doors.

During the Dambusters Raid (Operation Chastise) Eight of the Nineteen Avro Lancasters used in the Raid where lost, resulting in the loss of Fifty-Three aircrew and three been captured.

ED925/G (AJ-M) – Flown by Flt Lt John Vere Hopgood was hit by flak over the Möhne Dam durring the attack the aircraft was further damaged by the detonation of the Upkeep bomb which flew over the dam and exploded. The port wing came off and the plane crashed killing Five of the crew the surviving two members of the crew were taken as prisoners. (Pilot Officer Anthony Fisher Burcher and Flight Sergeant John William Fraser).
ED887/G (AJ-A) – Flown by Sqn Ldr Henery Melvin "Dinghy" Young was hit by flak over the Dutch Coast on the route homebound after its attack on Möhne Dam, the aircraft crashed near IJmuiden killing all the crew.
ED927/G (AJ-E) – Flown by Flt Lt Robert Norman George Barlow was hit by flak and crashed into power lines near Haldernon on the outbound route to the targets causing the aircraft to crash killing the crew.
ED937/G (AJ-Z) – Flown by Sqn Ldr Henery Eric Maudslay was the second aircraft to atack the Eder Dam releasing the Upkeep too late it impacted the dams parapet and detonated on impact which likely damaged the aircraft. Despite the damage, Maudslay nursed the aircraft on the return journey until hit by flak near Emmerich, Germany the aircraft crashed killing all seven crew members.
ED864/G (AJ-B) – Flown by Flt Lt William Astell on route to the Mohne Dam ED864 thought he had become lost (even though he was actually on track). He turned South and followed a canal to try and find a pinpoint but hit power lines causing the aircraft to crash killing all seven crew members.

ED910/G (AJ-C) – Flown by Flt Sgt Ottley the aircraft was hit by flak causing the aircraft to crash into the Boselagerschen forest near Heessen, Germany killing Six members of the crew with a soul surviver Flt Sgt Freddie Tees who became a PoW at Stalag Luft VI Heydekrug. Target Lister Dam
ED934/G (AJ-K) – Flown by Plt Off Vernon William Byers was hit by flak over the Dutch Coast on the outbound route to the Sorpe Dam while flying at 300ft the aircraft crashed killing all seven crew members.
