Pranav Joshi is writing the myth of the New Singaporean.
His main protagonist is not so much a character as an archetype, one whose eyes on the world can hardly be mistaken as foreign. Kenneth Lai gives clarity to both the original immigrant instincts which have defined Singapore historically and the abyss-embracing ones of the new professionals which – according to the official map of the future – must define Singapore in the twenty-first century.
Joshi moves nimbly, and sometimes humorously, through a maze of cultural encounters set on a scale that is no less than epic. This incurably hopeful novel appears to be either the latest twist in the fiercely Singaporean genre of nation-building stories or an enchanted corporate fable in disguise, or both.
