PhD supervision

I welcome applications from prospective PhD students. Before contacting me, however, please consider the following:

1. I supervise only PhD students interested in writing a quantitative dissertation. While it may contain some elements of qualitative research (individual case studies etc.), the core should be based on large-N techniques. If you do not have strong command of statistics and econometrics at the moment of your application, you are expected to learn these techniques to finish your dissertation.

2. I expect a high level of congruence of research interests between the PhD students and myself. The topics selected by PhD students should be directly related to my own research agenda rather than simply cover Russian politics or authoritarianism in general.

3. The PhD students interested in my supervision should have clear commitment towards remaining in academia in the long run. Please refrain from applying if you seek a PhD degree to advance your career outside academia.

If you are interested in writing a PhD thesis under my supervision, please send me a detailed letter of motivation, your CV and a brief idea of the direction of your future research (one or two pages). I would be happy to discuss the your plans with you.

The same requirements apply to visiting PhD students, visiting researchers or postdocs interested in joining the Chair of Russian and East European Politics.
