Equity & Inclusion

Racism, sexism, ableism and other forms of discrimination and structural inequity continue to limit who has the opportunity to thrive in science. I work to advance equitable and inclusive participation in science – through teaching in underserved communities, supporting educators to teach in evidence-based inclusive ways, and supporting colleagues who are working for equity at all levels in their astronomy and physics departments.

I'd love to support you and your department in advancing equity and inclusion. lestrubbe@gmail.com

Advancing equity in science departments

I was a facilitator for APS-IDEA, leading monthly meetings for equity teams from physics departments in Nigeria, Australia, Germany, Spain and the US through APS-IDEA (American Physical Society - Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Alliance)

I was the External Evaluator for the Physics & Astronomy SEA Change project of AAPT and AAAS, helping physics departments advance equity

Supporting inclusive teaching

Diversity in the College Classroom

I co-taught this course on inclusive teaching for CIRTL (Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching & Learning), for science grad students and postdocs

Workshops for educators

I've designed and led workshops on inclusive teaching for grad students, postdocs and instructors, at the Univ. of British Columbia and Univ. of Central Asia

Teaching in underserved communities

I'm Co-Founder and Co-Director for the Pan-African School for Emerging Astronomers

I've designed a course, led faculty professional development, and taught physics with UCA, whose students come from poor rural mountain regions of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Afghanistan

I led astronomy activities for this after-school program for inner-city girls in Oakland, CA, USA

I tutored math for inmates at San Quentin State Prison, CA, USA. Now known as Mount Tamalpais College.
