Moulting

Moulting is a process where by a chicken replaces their feathers over a four to eight week period. This is a natural process, and this process also gives the hen a rest from producing eggs. Moulting usually happens in autumn, when the days are getting shorter, but lack of food or normal light conditions can also cause moulting. Even if a hen is under artificial lights, moulting will still occur. This process happens once a year, and your chickens my look a bit scruffy and you may see their skin.

Moulting take a lot of energy, chickens with a proper diet shouldn't have any problem moulting, although you can supplement their diet to help them get through their moult with "spiced mineral supplement."
