A project called Sole Hope - undertaken by my students at Mecca Glen School in 2016
Sole Hope!
The school has found a new idea to help people in need. That idea is Soul Hope! This is a situation where some kids/adults alike in Africa are suffering from a foot flea called Jiggers…
Jiggers can affect a person severely. In order to protect people from these Jiggers they need shoes. And what we’re doing is gathering old denim jeans and turning them into shoes. Our goal is to have each class in the school to donate at least four pairs of jeans. Everyone in the school will be included in this activity. All the shoes that are made will be shipped to Africa and they will be made there for kids in need.
You do not need to send any supplies with your child other than a pair of jeans. Keep in mind that each class only needs 4 pairs so not everyone has to bring some. We will collect jeans between March 15 to the 24. As an extension to this, it is recommended that every pair of shoes sent has an $10 attachment. This money will help with shipping and as a wage for the men in Africa. These men complete the shoes. We would like to request to borrow some good fabric cutting shears/scissors (these will be returned after use).
Sole Hope started in 2010, founder Asher Collie was in Africa. The sights she saw had haunted her. She saw kids running around with no shoes and badly damaged feet. That got her passionate to start “Sole Hope” in America. This is an opportunity for us to help with simple sanitary needs. Now people all across North America and the world are collecting old denim jeans and sending cut pieces to Africa so kids can have a better, painless life.
