Hello,
My name is Debbie Wilson. I would like to introduce myself as a teacher applying for a position in your division. I have been in the public school system as a parent, teacher, and as a coach over the past twenty years. This year, I have a son in grade twelve and a daughter in grade ten. I started coaching basketball in Diamond Willow Middle school and then came to the Ponoka Secondary Campus in the merging of the two schools in 2013.
I grew up and attended high school in Fort St. John, BC. My first degree started at Grande Prairie College where I played women’s college basketball and was on the cross country running team. I then transferred to the University of Lethbridge, where I completed my first degree of a BSc. I majored in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and Kinesiology. As I finished this degree, I competed in intercollegiate rodeo.
My second degree is a BEd from the Burman University in Lacombe, Alberta. I am now currently teaching at Nipisihkopahk Middle School at the grade 4 and grade 5 level. Previously, I was on the substitution list for the Wolfcreek School Division and part time employed at the Ponoka Secondary Campus School. The schools I have been called to are the Ponoka Secondary Campus, Rimbey Outreach, Alix School, and Ermineskin jr/sr High School. I covered sick leaves for high school sciences and physical education teaching positions at Ponoka Secondary Campus.
My previous work experience is in the agricultural field using my biology and chemistry knowledge. Laboratory work and field experience is a great experience that I value. I loved the research that I experienced. This is when I got married and started a family. We have three children, who are now 20, 18, and 16 years old. I have given great thought about which direction to take my life at this point. I have realized that my experiences with children have been an even greater source of learning and growth for me. It has been very rewarding to teach the youth, who I have come into contact. This is why I have decided to pursue a teaching career.
My experiences with youth started with my own children. As my children grew, I began to volunteer in many groups in the community. I have been a primary and young women’s leader in our church for over ten years. My coaching experiences started with riding lessons for youth and adults - over twenty years ago. People are drawn to me for help and this creates an opportunity to give advice. I have been told that I am easy to approach and can teach in a way that people understand. From here, people keep coming back and learning more from me. More recently, I have been volunteered in high school as a basketball coach. I have also been able to work with speech professionals for seven years. My son has learned to work hard to overcome difficulties. I had to work hard to help him as well. That hard work has lead to great success. I look forward to the hard work and student success that I am striving towards in my teaching career.
Thank you for your time,
Debbie Wilson
