I work as an IT Training Manager in a large Hospital in the UK with over 8,500 staff. As part of both clinical and non-clinical IT training, many staff are required to pass an e-learning module relating to the National database of patient demographic data (Personal Demographic Service) with over 60 million records.
Behaviourism drives much of the training my team and I carry out. Courses are designed as a means to an end and attendance is a prerequisite to being able to do their job. (Stimulus) - the learner is required to participate and complete this online learning module where there is a minimum 80% pass score. (Response) the learner is required to pass this in order to gain access to the plethora of IT systems for their job role. Motivation for the learner aplenty!
Behaviourism pros:
Accessibility - 24/7/365
Assessment is completed automatically and feedback provided instantly and completely objectively
Quantifiable, consistent and transparent
Cons:
Can depth of knowledge and understanding be truly measured by a one-shot 30 minute exam?
Testing in this way can be unproductive for many learners who may be pressurised or anxious about the test.
