Media Literacy

"Young people are learning from media constantly, whether they realize it or not.

"Media literacy empowers them to differentiate advertisements from facts, propaganda from news. It help them to understand how the media -- even entertainment products -- can manipulate us, influence our perceptions, beliefs and desires, as well as help us express ourselves and share out points of view.

"If we teach children basic media literacy in school, we give them keys to unlocking hidden messages in media for the rest of their lives."

But First: What's a Media Literacy?!

Media Literacy expands literacy to include digital and entertainment products, such as television, videos, movies, advertisements, internet sites and games. Much as we seek to teach our kids about good nutrition and avoiding overeating or junk food, media literacy helps children cultivate healthy viewing habits, giving the ability to ACCESS, ANALYZE, EVALUATE and  CREATE media.  LTV Communications' work underscores the need for us all to be literate media consumers.
