History

The bakery at 16 Lansdown Road has existed since 1839. It was first owned by the Sampson family, who ran it for over a century. It then changed hands a couple of times before being taken over by the Smiths, who have owned and run it since 1994.

Popularly known as the Lansdowne Bakery, after the road it was situated in (written in the old-fashioned spelling with an 'e'). Prior to its use as a bakery the building and site had been the town's original Methodist Chapel.
