"Pastfinders” is a group of enthusiasts who meet once a month as a focus and forum for the local history of these two coastal villages and the surrounding area.

New local history book available soon
The McCarthy brothers were photographers who lived in and worked in Lancing. Phil Fry is producing a book titled:
Lancing, The McCarthy Brothers , photographic history, 1908 - 1931.
It contains 180 pages with 362 images mostly taken from Phil’s personal collection. The cost will be £20 plus postage.

Open Day at West Sussex Record Office, Saturday 25 November 2023
To celebrate the 50th birthday of our friends' group, the West Sussex Archives Society, a special open day will be held from 10.00am to 3.30pm.
Come along and enjoy a range of activities:
- Tours of the Record Office: See behind the scenes, including a strongroom and the conservation studio (tours at 10.30am, 11.30am and 2.30pm; limited places; booking essential)
- Display of original archives, including our oldest document dated 780 AD, and items purchased with help from the West Sussex Archives Society
- Old cinefilms of West Sussex, from the collections of Screen Archive South East, will be running all day on a big screen
- Royal Sussex Regiment Museum: Display of original objects from the museum collections
- Sussex Family History Group: Advice desk staffed by experts from our local family history society
- Family and local history research: Staff will be on hand to advise on resources available at the Record Office to trace your family tree, study the history of your local area, or discover the history of your house
- Special archives projects: Stalls with information on recent projects to catalogue the archives of Crawley New Town and survey archives of the HIV/Aids epidemic in England and Wales
- West Sussex Archives Society: Members will be on hand to answer your questions about the Society and, if you'd like to join, sign you up for membership
Free entry; refreshments available.

Earlier this year, Alan Bradley gave us a fascinating talk and we wish him well with his very laudable efforts to get these children remembered by a blue plaque at Lancing Library. Heritage Lottery Fund
Since 2012 we have carried the logo of the National Lottery Heritage fund on our website in recognition of its support in funding the purchase of essential equipment to scan and store many negatives, original photographs and archives held by Lancing & Sompting Pastfinders. We still feel it necessary to acknowledge the support of HLF and whilst keeping the logo have moved its position.
Meetings are held generally on the first Tuesday of each month in Sompting at Harriet Johnson Hall, Loose Lane, starting 7.30pm..
Annual Membership: £6 plus £2 each meeting attended. Visitors: £5.00 per evening.
