Bobbins were traditionally made of wood or bone, but can now be found made out of a wide variety of materials. Some bobbins are 'spangled', or decorated with beads through the bottom of the bobbin to easily identify each pair.
Wooden clothespins are also a cheap and easy alternative to bobbins!
Bobbin lace, or pillow lace, is often made on a round pillow as seen here.
Bolster pillows set in a basket or stand can be used to make continuous pieces of lace. As the pattern is worked, the pillow is rotated in order to allow for the extension of the ribbon.
These pillows are a mix of an angled pillow to rest the bobbins on, while the working section is similar to the bolster pillow. These allow for continuous lace while maintaining support of the bobbins themselves.
