PhD and M.Tech. students

The lab welcomes students interested in neuroscience, behavior, mental health, genetics, or computing. We welcome motivated students with backgrounds in all branches of engineering, as well as students from physics, mathematics, chemistry, or biology. Prior experience in neuroscience is not required - the required experimental skills can be learnt after joining the lab. The only prerequisite is the willingness to dive deep into a new area.

PhD admissions are conducted by the BSBE department twice a year (summer and winter), and M.Tech. admissions are conducted once a year (summer). Application deadlines are usually in February/March for summer and October/November for winter admissions. Check IITK PG admissions website for the latest announcements.

For B.Tech./B.S. degree holders from NITs, IISERs, IITs and IIITs seeking admission in PhD, the requirement of GATE or JRF is waived if the applicant has CPI/CGPA above 7.5 (or 75% marks). Please check this link for all eligibility criteria.

A part of our lab is developing software tools to provide cognitive training for dealing with mental disorders. For this work, we are looking to hire full-time software developers with expertise in web programming (especially front-end development using Angular). Salary as per experience. Additional perks include free accommodation in the green campus, access to campus facilities and health center, intellectually stimulating work environment, and a chance to make an important contribution to socially-relevant research. Email: guptan@iitk.ac.in. Please encourage your friends who may be interested in this position to apply.

Post-doctoral fellows

Well-funded positions are available for qualified individuals. The lab is also open to hosting post-doctoral fellows who wish to apply for independent funding. Candidates with expertise in at least one of the following may apply: electrophysiology, calcium-imaging, two-photon microscopy, mosquito biology and behavior, Drosophila genetics/neurobiology, gene-editing (e.g. CRISPR), mathematical modeling, programming, and electronics.

Project Associate, Undergraduate projects, interns

Full-time project positions may be available for candidates who have skills in any of the following areas:

- algorithms and mathematical modeling/simulations

- web-development (Python, Angular, CSS, Javascript, Bootstrap)

- UI/UX design, game development, computer animations, graphics, videos, illustration

- Drosophila genetics, mosquito biology, cloning, CRISPR-based gene editing

IITK students: UGP positions in the lab require a significant time commitment. Students from non-BSBE departments but with interest in neuroscience or in programming can also apply. I will be happy to provide letters of recommendation to students who have worked in the lab for at least one year and made significant contribution to a project (the letter will accurately describe what you did and how sincere you were in the lab).

Non-IITK students: Short-term positions may be available for students who have experience in programming, particularly web-programming, app-development, game development or computer graphics. Please apply through the SURGE program (applications for SURGE usually open in Jan/Feb) and also send an email to the PI. Students who can arrange their own accommodation in Kanpur can apply directly to the PI.
