Loukas + Kyle Workshop


Basic ground rules. Expected to show up every week, ask questions, stay engaged.

Presentations.  There are five possible styles.

1.       Brainstorming presentation.

a.       30 mins.

b.       No question required, simply describe a dataset, an idea, or a paper you read (and perhaps follow on questions, criticism), and we help you better develop your idea.

2.       Teaching presentation.

a.       30 mins.

b.       Teach us about a tool, dataset, or model that you are struggling to learn, or have recently mastered and want to practice your exposition or try out modifications.

3.       Research presentation.

a.       1 hour.

b.       The usual format: question, model/data, answer (or want operator if no answer).

c.       Must be followed up the next week with progress report.

4.       Discussion presentation.

a.       1 hour, followed by a 15-30 minute discussion by a fellow student.

b.       Discussant preferably more senior.

c.       Can come from other workshops.

d.       Reserved for more advanced presentations, e.g. papers ready to be submitted at a journal or a conference.

e.       Must be followed up the next week with progress report.

5.       Progress report.

a.       15 minutes.

b.       Summarize most important feedback from prior week (e.g. “People were confused about X.”)

c.       Approach to address comment (e.g. “I attempting to fix X by doing Y”).

Expectations.

For all years: At least one research/discussion presentation and progress report per semester. In addition:

1.       3rd years:

a.       Third year paper completed by April.

b.       At least two brainstorming or teaching presentations.

c.       Create a website with a CV.

d.       With input from us, consider taking one to two classes.

e.       Finish oral exams.

2.       4th years:

a.       Must complete one paper, start another paper. So, two total papers.

b.       One paper completed by April.

c.       One paper on your website by April.

d.       Apply for DDF and other fellowships.

e.       Submit to conferences: examples are Midwest Macro, Society for Advance Economic Theory, Econometric Society (North America/European), Royal Economic Society, other student conferences, Society for Economic Dynamics (reach) etc. See conferences listed here: https://editorialexpress.com/cgi-bin/conference/cm.cgi)

f.        Apply for summer and other internships at IMF/World Bank/Feds/ECB.

3.       5th years:

a.       Fall: well-developed job market paper plan (question, model/data, clear path to attain answer).

b.       Two completed papers by winter of 5th year.

c.       By July, 3 completed papers, including JMP.

d.       Present in the April competition for job candidates.

e.       Apply for summer internships at IMF/World Bank/Feds/ECB.

f.        What you need to know: deadlines for job applications to World Bank/IMF etc. are in the summer (mid June).
