Abstract: The employment of many transient workers by gas firms during shale gas booms can disrupt local temporary lodging markets. This study examines the effect of shale gas development on hotel room demand and supply (average daily rates). Our results suggest drilling has a significant positive effect on county-level room demand and average daily rates in Pennsylvania, increasing room demand by an average of 101 room nights per well. We also explore spillover effects of drilling in adjacent counties and consider the effect of drilling among three time periods (2001-2008, 2009-11, and 2012-13).
