This is an elementary course that introduces current issues and special topics in RMSC. Students are required to present and discuss books and current articles in the related topics.
Savage, S. L. (2012). The flaw of averages: why we underestimate risk in the face of uncertainty. Wiley. (Copies can be bought from CUHK bookstore and found in University Library.)
Ability to present a complex (risk-management, statistics, finance) concept concisely and precisely.
Basic computer skills (LaTeX, R-language, etc).
Communication with professionals efficiently (presentation, discussion, collaboration).
Development of job hunting skills (CV building, job searching, study planning).
(Lectures) The lecturer gives 2 lectures (Weeks 1 & 2) to
introduce the course, the RMSC major and the RMSC related stuffs; and
present useful computer, presentation and discussion skills.
(Individual presentation) Each student is required to
conduct a mini-lecture (2 mins) on any topic of your choice individually;
use at least one presentation technique (introduced in class); and
answer short questions raised by the audience.
(Group presentation) Students are divided into groups. Each group is required to
give a 15-min group presentation on around 5 chapters of the textbook;
lead a 15-min interactive discussion; and
prepare 3 multiple-choice questions by LaTeX to check the understanding of the audience.
(Career planning) The lecturer spends 2 lectures (Weeks 12 & 13) to
introduce RMSC-related jobs; and
teach the skills needed to write a professional resume.
(Book report) Each student is required to submit a short report that
is one-page long and produced by LaTeX; and
contains one graph produced by R.
