NETS Standard 3: Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
ISTE Definiton: Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.
collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.
communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.
model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.
How I apply this standard in my teaching.
I practice and model the knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of professionals.
I have created program sites for educating administrators, parents, and colleagues on the coursework in our teacher education program, and have worked hard to "brand" our program for communication and networking. I create and use these tools side by side with my students. We use Basecamp for project management and communicate with business partners there. We have also used Trello for individual projects. The students create resumes, 30-second elevator speeches, philosophies of educatioin, and linked in accounts, and in the process, I share my professional examples and can relate to them the challenges and successes I have experienced in creating and using these sorts of items.
I stress communication skills and etiquette, and we practice regularly by collaborating with parents, mentors, business partners, colleagues, and peers. We use twitter in various ways. I model a professional twitter account which I require the students to create. I have also created a program twitter, @wevegotclass, as a means of broadcasting our activities and events. Alumni of our program continue to follow this twitter to get news about what we are doing. On our last trip to the national Future Educators Association conference in Washington, D.C., I had parents follow this twitter account where they could see day-to-day activities in which we were participating at the conference.
Another communication tool we use is called "Remind." This is a web-based communication tool which anonymously sends text messages to group members for broadcast messages. I have a group set up for our a.m. and p.m. sessions, one set up for alumni, and another set up for parents of the students who traveled to the FEA Conference to send out emergency messages if needed. I use this program to send out reminders to students about changes in schedules, meeting times, etc.
I also model professional use of email and calendar by requiring students to keep a professional calendar of their own and then copying items that affect their CAPS Teacher Education time to our group calendar.
Finally, I model and facilitate research practices for my students. I work in collaboration with them on projects such as the gaming project and others. I have done this in various ways including creation of a facebook class for senior citizens in our district, working with ChaseKC on activities for an autism awareness night, collaborating with other strands at CAPS in modeling the autism sensory chair product, and others.
Another thing that I like to do to facilitate community outreach and networking is to seek out opportunities for students to work in private schools and other districts and to see other areas of education careers such as occupational therapy, counseling, administration, and corporate training.
One of our successful projects this year was creating a STEM unit for 5th graders in Manhattan, KS which was done virtually using double robots, edmodo, and webcams. We worked with four different groups of students during four days and conducted various activities for a lesson on DNA. The 5th graders created a final DNA strand project, took part in discussions, and posted comments and took part in other activities on EdModo.
