Kamalesh Singh Mahar, Ph.D. (Biotech), FSAB, FIAT, FAPT, FBS

I am research oriented professional working in the field of Plant Biotechnology. My main work area is on assessment of molecular systematics, genetic diversity, biodiversity conservation, population genetics, DNA fingerprinting of plants, Plant phylogeny, evolutionary biology and development of plant DNA barcode using PCR based methods. I am also interested on Plant molecular breeding and micro-propagation of medicinal & economic important plants.

Biography

Dr. Kamalesh S. Mahar is an Indian Plant biotechnologist working on molecular systematics. He was born on 12th January 1984 in Dewalthal, Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand (India). He received his basic education at Dewalthal in various schools including Saraswati Sishu Mandir, Maharshi Vidhya Mandir and Govt. Inter College, Dewalthal. After completing his primary education at Dewalthal, he moved to Lucknow in 2000 for higher studies. He graduated in Biology (B.Sc.) from Lucknow University, UP, India in 2003 and M.Sc. (Biotech) from H.N.B. Garhwal University, Srinagar, Uttarakhand, India in 2006 and thereafter a Ph.D. (Biotech) from Kumaun University, Nainital, Uttarakhand, India in 2012.

Dr. Mahar elected as a Fellow of Society for Applied Biotechnology (FSAB) in 2013, Fellow of Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (FIAT) in 2014, Fellow of Association for Plant Taxonomy (FAPT) and Fellow of Indian Botanical Society (FBS) in 2015  for his outstanding achievements and contribution to the field of plant biotechnology and plant molecular systematics. Dr. Mahar has published several research papers in peer reviewed National and International journals. He has participated in several seminars / conferences / workshops and exchanged his scientific accomplishments. He is a life member of various renowned scientific and professional societies viz. Indian Science Congress Association, Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy, Prof. H. S. Srivastava Foundation for Science & Society, The Indian Botanical Society, Society for Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Association for Plant Taxonomy, Society for Applied Biotechnology. 

Dr. Mahar has over nine years research experience in systematics and diversity analysis of plants using molecular markers. During the period of research endeavors, Dr. Mahar have visited different bio-geographical zones of the country and worked with different research organizations viz. Central Soil & Water Conservation Research & Training Institute (ICAR), Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India; CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India; Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan (ICAR), Almora, Uttarakhand, India; Centre for Orchid Gene Conservation of Eastern Himalayan Region (A centre under the SERB, DST, India), Senapati, Manipur, India, University of Lucknow, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India and CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Lucknow, India.

His areas of interest are Plant phylogeny and evolutionary biology, Genomics, Genetic diversity, systematics and population genetic studies, DNA fingerprinting of plants using molecular markers, development of plant DNA barcode, Plant molecular breeding and micro-propagation of medicinal and economic important plants. Dr. Mahar is currently working on Molecular systematics of plants and is well versed with the PCR based technologies being employed in molecular systematics studies. 

A part of scientific affair, Dr. Mahar also engaged with social works and facilitating a social organization: Creative Uttarakhand-म्यर पहाड़ to promote the culture of Uttarakhand.
