Philmont Trek 2025
What is Philmont?
Philmont is BSA's premier high adventure base. Based in Cimarron, New Mexico, it boasts over 14,000 acres of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains. With rugged trails, craggy peaks, and pristine meadows, Philmont offers adventures that combine the best of the Old West— gold panning, chuckwagon dinners, homesteading, burro packing, and interpretive history—with exciting challenges for today—rock climbing, burro racing, mountain biking, and rifle shooting—in an unbeatable recipe for fast-moving outdoor fun.
If your scout loves summer camp, Philmont is that and so much more. This is a trip that will create memories for his lifetime. This video speaks to the opportunities better than I ever could - https://youtu.be/Jxx5L872yVc?si=rYHuKnbN_rYzhumk
Dates
The entire trip is expected to be July 15-24, 2025.
This includes 2 days spent touring New Mexico prior to Philmont (needed to acclimate to the elevation). This tour will include the Sandria Tram, Atomic Museum, Indian Cliff Dwellings, and whitewater rafting on the Rio Grande.
Cost
The cost for the 2025 trip is expected to be a little over $3000 per participant and includes all activities, meals, and airfare. This is an estimate and may change primarily due to cost differences between now and when booking flights.
Backpacking gear will be needed for the trip, and I would recommend budgeting $1500 if you currently have no gear. Philmont does offer rentals for significant gear items, which can help to defer some cost. We will be offering fundraising options, as well, to help lower the direct cost of this trip.
If interested, a deposit of $150 is due December 1, 2023. Starting in January, we will begin a payment plan of $190 per month per participant.
Requirements
Scouts must be under 21 and over 14 (or 13 years old and completed the 8th grade) by July 2025, and have completed First Class Rank. Strict height and weight requirements are necessary to attend, found at: https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/philmonttreks/trekrequirements/healthmedicalrequirements/ As part of check-in all crew members will meet with Philmont physicians. Participants not meeting the requirements will not be permitted on the trail.
Additionally, each participant is required to bring specific personal gear, found here: https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/philmonttreks/whattobring/ Most gear listed is considered essential.
Preparations
Starting in 2024 we will begin bi-monthly training hikes and shakedown activities. The activities will include physical training via hikes and camping as well as instruction on backpacking equipment. Participation in these activities (or their equivalent) is a requirement - this will be a vigorous, but rewarding, trip and requires physical training and knowledge to participate.
Next steps
If interested, please let Chad Weiner or Brian Dungan of your intention to participate. A deposit of $150 will be due December 1, 2023 to register your spot at Philmont.
