| So who is our council's name sake, Father Emonds? He was a German immigrant, born in Bielefeld, Germany, on June 13, 1830. Father Emonds received his ecclesiastical studies from Bishop Loras in Dubuque and was ordained there on Sunday December 19, 1852. While pastor at Saint Mary's in Iowa City, Father Emonds started mission churches in eastern Iowa. In 1858 he established Immaculate Conception mission church in Cedar Rapids, the first Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
