The following are true stories that students could explore and learn from.

After the wake of a disastrous tsunami that claimed numerous lives and devastated coastal towns in Japan, comic Gilbert Gottfried, the voice of the Aflac duck, got fired after tweeted several off-color jokes. This is one example of his jokes: “Japan is really advanced. They don’t go to the beach. The beach comes to them.” Washingtonpost

A waitress became irritated after she had to stay past her shift to wait on a table of two. When the customers finally departed, they left what the waitress deemed an inadequate tip. "Thanks for eating at Brixx," she reportedly wrote on her Facebook page, before using profanity and calling the customers "cheap." inc.com

Adam Smith, former CEO, lost his job and had to go on food stamps after he videotaped himself telling the drive-thru attendant how much he despised Chick-Fil-A. Once he posted the video, it went viral and he found himself unemployed. USA Today

A director of a corporation began tweeting during her travel to South Africa. She tweeted the following on her departure flight:  “Weird German Dude: You’re in First Class. It’s 2014. Get some deodorant." On her flight to Cape Town, she tweeted: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!" New York Times

“A California Pizza Kitchen worker was fired for his tweeting. His profanity on the company's Twitter page, along with his strong negative opinions about the company's new uniforms, led to his dismissal."

"A Denver math teacher published revealing photos on her social media account and tweeted about pot smoking and other behaviors that we would not think of as characteristic of a teacher. These posts got her fired in spite of her popularity among her students." USA Today

“A Seattle coffee shop fired a barista who started a blog about the daily tribulations of his job...He even poked fun at his boss, writing, “I like to use a lot of big words when I tweet, that way if my boss ever finds my twitter account, he won't understand any of it.""

"A Texas Teenager Got Fired for a Tweet Before Starting Her Job" She tweeted “Ew I start this f*** a** job tomorrow,” tweeted the teen with username @Cellla_. Time.com

A teacher listed "teaching chitlins in the ghetto of Charlotte" in her "Interests" section of Facebook. She also posted "I am teaching in the most ghetto school in Charlotte" in her "About Me" section Business Insider

Connor Riley gets fired before she even started her job by twetting this comment "Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work." NBC News

"Around September 2013, the City of Toronto fired two male firefighters over sexist tweets that degraded females." Global News Canada

“On June 6, 2023, it was brought to my attention that there were some racist posts on Officer Chaz Foy’s personal Facebook account. I reviewed those posts. The posts are not in keeping with the standards of the Marion Police Department,” Marion Chief of Police Angela Haley said in a statement. “I do not condone this type of behavior and will not tolerate it. On June 7, 2023, Chaz Foy’s employment with the Marion Police Department was terminated.”  Cleveland.com
