The Internet is a fantastic resource that can help many with finding decent employment.  According to Undercover Recruiter, if you have no social media presence, it can indicate to prospective employers that you are inept when it comes to the Internet. They say at minimum, one should have a robust profile on Linkedin. Many employers would prefer candidates have savvy and active Facebook and Twitter profiles. “According to Forbes, two of the key personality traits employers look for are intellectual curiosity and self-monitoring. Nearly 60% of employers are looking for these traits that are readily demonstrated by a discerning social media presence.” Of course this depends on what kind of employment you are seeking. Considering an online profile can become an asset for some professionals, it is imperative that it is created thoughtfully and responsibly. Though we want to discourage our students from posting their names online, it isn’t too early to educate them about posting responsibly.  They need to ask the following questions before posting: Is the information true?; Is the information beneficial to others?; Is the post inspiring?; Is the post necessary?; Will the post make the world a better place? Check out the Footprints page and explore scenarios to determine if individuals are leaving a good or bad digital footprint.
