Braking, downhill skating, and overcoming obstacles while skating on the streets

The technical requirements for street skating are relatively high, and people who play very well on the rink may encounter problems when street skating. The basic requirements for roller skating in street skating are braking, downhill control, and obstacle crossing, each of which requires specific training. These have been key training contents for our roller skating class in the past few years.

Leisure skates usually use a heel brake to brake, which requires relatively low technical requirements but is very efficient. After training, you can stop in a short distance at high speeds. Speed skates do not have brakes, and the other foot's wheels are used to friction on the ground to slow down and finally stop, called T-stop. It requires high technical requirements and takes a longer time to master.

The importance of braking skills can be imagined. Failing to stop before crossing the road may lead to life-threatening situations. Not being able to brake while coming down a steep slope may lead to serious injuries due to loss of control. I have experienced almost all of these dangers during my initial roller skating process, which is why we have set up specific training subjects such as braking, downhill control, and obstacle crossing in roller skating classes for kids over the past few years. In short, they are all lessons learned from past experiences. If all of these lessons were written out, they would be too long for everyone to read.

Downhill control is a specific application of braking and is an inevitable situation when street skating outdoors. A 1.5 km long downhill slope can reach speeds of up to 65 km/h at the bottom if the speed is not controlled. General leisure skates will vibrate dramatically and lose control before reaching that speed. The usual practice is to bring brakes at the beginning of the downhill, strictly control speed, and never take risks, even if it means falling behind.

Is braking really that difficult? You'll know if you try it on the highway. The most crucial thing is that your balance has to be good. You have to be able to stand on one foot at high speeds so that you can use the other foot to brake. It takes time and practice to achieve this level of natural reaction.

Street skating involves obstacles. The basic requirement is that you can go up and down curbs. When there's a car following you and getting impatient, you should have the ability to jump onto the sidewalk. When crossing the street, you need to be able to slide down the curb without tripping and falling in the middle of the road. In our city, the new roads are marked with sidewalks for the blind, which are perfect obstacles for inline skating and present a certain level of challenge for beginners. The main technique for overcoming obstacles is the scissor step, which must be mastered proficiently.

In the past few years, we have set up inline skating classes specifically for children, including training for overcoming obstacles, to ensure their safety when crossing the street. On the training ground, we use wooden planks to simulate these obstacles. After about a year or two of training, the children are able to cross these obstacles proficiently. This is also an important reason why none of our participants were injured during multiple long-distance P2P events.

If your child has not attended inline skating classes before, please carefully consider their ability to brake downhill and overcome obstacles when signing them up for street skating activities. Conduct targeted training and practical assessment, balance the risks and benefits, let the children participate, and reduce the risks to the minimum. If you can't skate the entire distance at once, skate one section at a time and gradually build up to the whole distance.
