Milesstone FAQ

Milestone Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is Milestone? What is its purpose?

Simply put, Milestone is an event where children skate for one hour on a 330-meter (or 100-meter, depending on the venue) track, and the goal is to see how many laps the child can complete. When the child accumulates a certain number of laps (based on their level), they can exchange them for a small gift, which they can choose from a gift box. https://youtu.be/7gKfgGClZPk?si=paZJvERHIpBuzqc6

For children, Milestone is an annual roller skating learning review, a spice for regular roller skating classes, and a stepping stone towards regular roller skating activities. This event is also an endurance exercise for children, similar to an adult marathon, which has been proven to be beneficial for health. Children are smart and won't get too tired. For parents, accompanying their children to class is more of a participation and appreciation factor, while Milestone is a more direct form of participation that allows everyone to get to know each other better.

2. My child has just started taking roller skating classes, and we are worried that they skate too slowly. Can they participate in Milestone?

Some new parents are worried that their children skate too slowly, but there is no need to worry. The number of laps we use to distribute gifts is calculated based on the child's performance in their regular classes. For example, if a fast-skating child usually skates 50 laps in class, they will need to skate about 23 laps to receive a gift on the day of Milestone. On the other hand, if a child can only skate 5 laps in class, they will need to skate about 2 laps to receive a gift. In general, at the end of the event, whether a child skates fast or slow, they can receive about 5 to 7 gifts, depending on their performance on the day. Milestone was originally designed for beginners to allow them to participate. Milestone is not a competition, but an event where anyone can skate for an hour regardless of their level. The number of laps skated will not be published, and there is no score.

3.How is the gift distribution circle of Milestone calculated?

According to the regular class results, the students are divided into groups, and the calculation formula is "half of the average value of the maximum number of laps in the regular class." For example, if there are three people in a group, and the maximum laps they skated in regular class were 32, 33, and 35 respectively, then the average value of the maximum laps in this group is (32+33+35)/3=33.33, and half of it is 16.67. Rounded to the nearest integer, the gift distribution circle of this group is every 16 laps. There are about 6 such groups, and the purpose of the groups is to introduce a small amount of intra-group competition. The gifts are self-selected, and if you can skate faster in your group, it will be helpful to get the gift you want earlier.

4.Why are the hosting families changed every year?

Starting from the second year, Milestone implemented a rotating hosting system. There are many reasons for this. First, it is important to keep up with the times. If the same families host the event every year, it will be difficult to introduce new concepts and ideas, and it may not be sustainable in the long run. Bringing in new hosting families with new ideas and concepts can make the event more attractive. Second, participation is key. Volunteers are important, and only those who have experienced organizing such events can truly understand the significance of the event and have a sense of belonging.

Rotating hosting is not an assignment, but rather a self-application. You may indicate whether to apply for hosting when registering. The ratio of hosting families to the number of children participating in the event is about 1:5 to 1:10. For example, if there are 40 children registered, there will be 5 to 8 hosting families, and so on. This ratio basically ensures that there are enough hands on-site in the worst-case scenario. The main task of the hosting families is to buy gifts for the children and distribute them during the event. If there are too many families applying for hosting, the winner will be decided by drawing lots. If there are fewer families applying for hosting than required, the event for that year will be cancelled. In order to pass on experience, the previous hosting families will automatically become the advisory group for the current session, but they do not need to participate as hosts for the current session. Hosting families can be new or have hosted in the past.

5.As a family who has just joined the roller skating class, how can we host Milestone?

The main task of the host family is to buy gifts for the children. There are detailed records from previous years that can be referenced, including prices, types of gifts, and where to buy them, etc. As long as the gifts are purchased and distributed on the day of the event, the main task is completed. How to host and what to pay attention to has been documented in detail in previous years, so basically you can follow the instructions in the documents.

6.How many host families are needed for each Milestone event?

It's about 1/5 to 1/10 of the total number of registered children, generally ranging from 4 to 10 families. The first Milestone had 4 host families, the second had 4, the third had 6, the fourth had 5, and the sixth had 10.

7. On average, how many gifts can each child receive at the end of Milestone?

Each child can receive approximately 6 gifts on average. Generally, there will also be souvenirs, which are determined by the hosting families.

8. Can you register on-site on the day of the event?

For this event, some preparations need to be made in advance, such as calculating the number of laps for each child, preparing gifts, and programming the lap counting system. Therefore, on-site registration is not accepted.

9. How can one qualify for Milestone?

One must have the student ID number for the current year. This event is only open to children in the roller skating class (groups A-Q) and adult class for the current year.

10. What is the venue for the Milestone event like?

The event takes place on a 330-meter or 100-meter track (depending on the venue, it is a 330-meter track in 2021, 2022 and 2023), which is at least 6 meters wide, with electronic lap counting and a gift distribution area. Parents can watch the event on-site.

11. How is the date of Milestone determined each year?

Generally, it takes place between early August and mid-August on the last Sunday of summer vacation or the first Sunday after school starts in the morning, with adjustments made depending on whether the venue is available.

 Milestone FAQ

Milestone

3. Milestone

4. Milestone

7. Milestone
