APRS is digital communications information and position tracking channel for Ham radio. Using a single national channel, 144.390, it gives the mobile ham a place to monitor and capture what is happening in ham radio in the surrounding area.
A 2 meter radio connected to a TNC and a GPS will transmit its position into the network via a repeater called a digipeater and is passed along the network until the data packet reaches an iGate, and is ported onto the Internet. This can be very useful for vehicle and asset tracking, Search and Rescue operations, weather stations, etc.
To view all stations that have been iGated into the internet go to www.aprs.fi
Our local digipeater is called Kanab and is located at the White House site between Kanab and Fredonia. There are also digipeaters on Red Knoll, Pink Cliffs, Navajo Mountain, Mt. Ellen, Cedar Mountain, and around St. George.
