For prospective students

If you are interested in studying at Graduate School of International Development (GSID) at Nagoya University and pursuing a MA or PhD degree under my supervision, please follow the instructions below.

Please note that my major field is comparative politics and substantive area of research includes democratization, dictatorship, electoral accountability, and public opinion regarding understandings of democracy and preference for income redistribution. Most of my previous research uses quantitative methods and survey experiments. To learn more about my research, please visit here.

(1) MA applicants

It is not necessary for you to contact me before you send applications to our graduate program. To pursue a MA degree under my supervision, students are expected to have foundational knowledge of political science and empirical research methods. If your undergraduate training does not cover empirical political science research, you might want to read the following textbooks prior to application:

- Patrick H. O’Neil. 2023. Essentials of Comparative Politics (8th edition). W.W.Norton.

- Paul M. Kellstedt and Guy D. Whitten. 2018. The Fundamentals of Political Science Research (3rd edition). Cambridge University Press.

(2) Non-degree Research Student applicants

My general suggestion to prospective MA students is to directly apply to our MA program. Exceptions apply to students who are awarded a scholarship (ex., MEXT scholarship with embassy recommendation) and research studentship is a part of that scholarship. Prospective PhD students who want to study first as research student should email me to see if your dissertation project fits my expertise.

(3) PhD applicants

Prospective PhD students are expected to have solid foundation of political science and empirical research methods. Your MA thesis (or a writing sample) is supposed to provide the evidence for them. If you intend to pursue a PhD degree under my supervision, please email me at least one month prior to the application due.
