1. John1 Codling He married Judith Hall.
Children of John Codling and Judith Hall are:
+ 2 i. Elijah2 Codling, born 24 Apr 1790 in Bradfield, Norfolk, England.
3 ii. Judith Codling, born 16 Feb 1799 in Bradfield, Norfolk, England. She married Thomas Codling; born ABT 15 May 1802 in Nindolveston.
2. Elijah2 Codling (John1) was born 24 Apr 1790 in Bradfield, Norfolk, England.
Notes for Elijah Codling:
Phyllis Codling says this could be father of Elijah Codling b. Oct 3, 1817. The dates work out OK and the location is good, too. Got this from LDS IGI search.
His father: John Codling
His mother: Judith Hall
Child of Elijah Codling is:
+ 4 i. Elijah3 Codling, born 03 Oct 1817 in Wood Dalling, Norfolk, England.
4. Elijah3 Codling (Elijah2, John1) was born 03 Oct 1817 in Wood Dalling, Norfolk, England. He married MaryAnn Chesley 10 May 1842 in Dumfries Twp., Ontario, Canada, daughter of James Chisney and Jemima (Unknown). She was born 08 Jan 1824 in Heydon, Essex, England.
Notes for Elijah Codling:
All this new data is from an LDS international genealogy index search. All the names of Elijah Sr.'s and Mary Ann Chesley [Chisney?]'s children are correct, and the birthdates are within a year of what Phyllis Codling already had but since she got those dates from a Census, that could be why. The LDS list has them all born in Blenheim Township, Gloucester, England. Could be that they were born there and that the whole family moved to Canada. Phyllis doesn't think so because she has information that the couple married in Ontario. This one has them marrying in Dumfries, Scotland, but neither of them were from Scotland. The marriage source she refers to is according to: http://www.geneofun.on.ca/ontariolocator/alpha-d.html
There witnesses for their wedding were Richard Dawson and Peter Kingsbury. They were married in the Baptist Church in Blenheim by the Rev. Heman Fitch.
[Richard Dawson was married to Harriet kimble the same year in the same church, June 7, 1842. Peter Kingsbury also witnessed his marriage, but there was no listing for Peter.]
Dumfries North Township, Waterloo County (Currently exists).
Dumfries South Township, Brant County (Currently exists).
Marriage Notes for Elijah Codling and MaryAnn Chesley:
Phyllis Codling found Rev. Heman Fitch in a book on Marriage notices in Ontario. It's probably a
typo, but that's how it was spelled [Heman] in the book. [I had asked her if perhaps it should be Herman.]
Children of Elijah Codling and MaryAnn Chesley are:
5 i. Anne/Ann Jemima4 Codling, born 1842. She married Jonathon Frostick 06 Feb 1860 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada.
Notes for Anne/Ann Jemima Codling:
Phyllis Codling told me in our telephone conversation on April 5, 2004, that her records show that Anne/Ann Jemima Codling had seven children.
6 ii. Martha Jane Codling, born ABT 1846. She married John Malone 18 Feb 1867 in Oxford County, Ontario, Canada; born ABT 1843.
7 iii. Sarah Codling, born ABT 1847.
+ 8 iv. Stephen Codling, born 01 Aug 1851 in Blenheim Twp., Ontario, Canada; died 1916 in Carin, MI.
+ 9 v. James Thomas Codling, born 1855; died 20 Aug 1928.
+ 10 vi. Elijah Codling, Jr., born 1862; died 1922.
8. Stephen4 Codling (Elijah3, Elijah2, John1) was born 01 Aug 1851 in Blenheim Twp., Ontario, Canada, and died 1916 in Carin, MI. He married Phebe Annie Hersee 30 Apr 1873 in Drumbo, Blenheim Twp., Ontario, Canada, daughter of Henry Hersee and Rachel Marlatt. She was born 08 Nov 1855 in Blenheim Twp., Ontario, Canada, and died 01 Jun 1904 in Gladwin, MI.
Notes for Stephen Codling:
Source; Gladwin County Clerks Office - Marriage of Stephen Arthur Codling (His son.) to Winnie M. Harrold. Listed as Stephen's father on records.
Phoebe's obituary stated that she and Stephen had nine children. Have names of six of them but not the other 3.
The following from Shiawassee County Queries #3.
Phyllis Codling Sept. 15,, 1997.
I am researching the family of Josiah P. Hackett, most of whose family is buried in Pinetree Cemetery. Including: Josiah's daughters, Lovina Amanda Codling and Emma Eilber (and husband, Charles), Lovina A. Robinson Hackett (Josiah's Mother). Josiah lived in Corunna for a time. He died in 1936. He was a Civil War soldier who served two tours. Also, looking for information on Stephen Codling, who's son Charles Cicero was my grandfather. They moved to Gladwin, Mich., from the Dakota Territory. Stephen was born in Ontario, Canada, and his father, Elijah was born in England. Stephen married a Phoebe Hersee in Canada. Charles and wife Lovina Amanda Hackett owned a hotel briefly in Michigan, but I'm not sure right now where. Then they moved to upstate New York.
FamilyTreeMaker Home Page also by Phyllis Codling:
They emigrated to the United States via the Dakota territories near Valley City and then to Gladwin, Mich. Their son Charles was my grandfather, born in 1876, married Lavina Amanda Hackett, daughter of Josiah P. Hackett and Emma Hill Hackett. They had five children, four of whom lived to adulthood, including my father, Paul Emmett Codling, who was born in 1917 and died in 1994.
I (Phyllis) am having trouble determining for sure is who Stephen Codling's father was. I have that it was Elijah, who was born in England. But absolutely nothing beyond that.
Notes from Phyllis: July 25, 2001.
Bureau of Land Management Web site (www.glorecords.blm.gov)
Phyllis located documentation of Stephen Codling's land purchase in North Dakota. According to information on Bureau of Land Management Web site, he bought 144.08 acres in Barnes County, N.D. (which is where Valley City is located, and that's been told to her by family members including D.A. [?] that the family lived there. The land was purchased July 18, 1895. The authority (which Phyllis believes is whatever treaty or law allowed the sale of land in the Dakotas) is Timber Culture (17 Stat. 605), dated March 3, 1873.
The Assession/Serial No. is NDMTAA 117409
The Document No. is 1157
We know that Stephen moved the family there, likely from Canada, and later moved them all back to Michigan, leaving Charles and at least one or two of his siblings behind because they had been hired as farm hands. They were teenagers and were left to find there own ways back to the family. Phyllis notes that Charles would have been almost 20 when Stephen bought the property. Three years later, he was in the Spanish-American War.
Information from the 1885 ND Census that lists the following:
(Indexed by ND Institute for Regional Studies)
Stephen Codling, 34, Farmer
Phebe Codling, 28
George H. Codling, 12
Cisroe C. Codling (Charles Cicero), 10
Edward Codling, 7
Teddy Codling, 5
Gertrude Codling, 3
Lotta Codling (8/12 Oct.)(Phyllis has no idea who this is.)
She says there should be a Bertha F., as she has information on her birth Sept. 27, 1884.
Also from the ND Institute for Regional Studies:
Stephen Codling became a U.S. Citizen Dec. 22, 1891. Phyllis thinks this may be the second time he applied for citizenship because the list also includes a Steven Codling (from Canada living in Barnes Co.) naturalized June 1, 1881. She believes this is the same person and that Stephen had to go back and apply again to get the spelling of his name corrected. She has ordered copies of the paperwork.
In a conversation with Phyllis Codling April 5, 2004 she stated that Stephen Arthur and Phebe Codling came to the U.S. via Deluth, Minnesota from Algoma District, Dennis, Ontario.
Notes for Phebe Annie Hersee:
Source; Gladwin County Clerks Office - Marriage of Stephen Arthur Codling (Her son.) to Winnie M. Harrold. Listed as Stephen's mother on records.
Notes in Vance's baby book information listed her name as Feba (Could be that author of note knew what her name was but not the spelling.)
Her obituary from the Gladwin County Record dated June 3, 1904, read:
PHOEBE ANNIE (HERSEY) CODLING
PHOEBE ANNIE CODLING [sic Phebe]

She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom are still living. Funeral services will be held today (Friday) and interment will take place in the Grout township cemetery.
Notes from Phyllis Codling on Phebe Hersee: [GEDCOM Aug 24, 2001]
According to a database maintained by North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies, Phebe A. Codling became a U.S. citizen on May 18, 1889. Phyllis has requested copies of these papers in hopes there is good information about her family in Canada.

Notes for George Henry Codling:
Date of death in notes found among papers in Vance's baby book and information gives date of death on Oct 14, 1965, but obituary in Gladwin County Record dated 10/13/1965. Need to get copy of this to verify date.
Social Security Death Index Search Results as found on Family Tree Maker Online: GenealogyLibrary.com have his death date listed as September 1965. I suspect it should be October however based on above. It also shows his birth as April 2, 1874 and we have April 28 as written in Vance's baby book.

Death date is assumed to be Oct. 7 since the paper is published on a Weds. and the obituary appeared in the one dated Oct. 13. He married (1) Lovina Amanda Hackett 18 Mar 1902 in Gladwin, MI. She was born 13 Jul 1880 in Almer, Tuscola Co., MI, and died 17 Dec 1939 in Florida. He married (2) Florence (Unknown) 1940.
Notes for Charles Cicero Codling:
Phoebe Hersey Codling's obituary stated that she had 9 children, 7 still living at the time of her death. I had names of 7. Floyd Wayne Codling, a grandson, stated that he remember an Uncle Cicero Codling who lived in Detroit.
I will assume this to be one of the 9 pending further research and verification. This information was confirmed by genealogy sent to me by Phyllis Codling of Falls Church, VA.
Floyd also said there was a Codling Clothing Store in Royal Oak at about that time and that there were quite a few Codlings in the Detroit area. He doesn't know the relationship of them. Will need to check this out further.
Phyllis Codling's notes for Charles Cicero Codling:
According to Paul [Charles' youngest son], Charles Codling was a big, muscular man with a very thick neck. He had a great temper, which the boys often felt from the other end of a leather strap. He and Lovina bought a hotel in Michigan, but sold it after the first male customer came in and referred to Grandma as "Madame." After they moved to New York, they owned a hotel in Panama and grandpa also had a harness shop. Aunt Iris [Charles' only daughter] and Grandma had to work hard to take care of the hotel and guests. The boys didn't have to do as much, which I think Iris always resented, even though they, especially Paul, were the light of her life. Aunt Iris, the last time I [Phyllis] talked to her, seemed to think Grandpa basically worked Grandma to an early death.
They had already moved to Florida before Lovina died. Some time after her death, Charles Codling remarried to a woman named Florence. They didn't have children. She also had children from a previous marriage, but I don't have her information. I do, however have a photograph of her. He died in 1952 in Florida. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the ocean. [End of Phyllis Codling's notes]
During a phone conversation with Phyllis Codling she said that Charles Cicero Codling served in the Spanish American War.
Info from Phyllis in an e-mail dated 23 Aug 2001 - According to a document on this Web site [Bureau of Land Management <www.glorecords.blm.gov], Charles C. bought 160 acres of land in Tripp County, S.D., Sept. 16, 1912. Phyllis doesn't know why he would have bought that land and she doesn't believe they ever lived there. She knows that they moved from Michigan to N.Y. State sometime before her dad was born in 1917. She wonders if they went to South Dakota first and wonders what ever happened to the land.
She also found a military pension document for Charles filed in 1902 in Michigan. He is listed as with the B&K 10th U.S. Infantry. The application no. is: 1286921 and the certification no is: 1096984. This information was included in Michigan Civil War Pension on a Web site, but it is probably for when he served in the Spanish-American War in Cuba. He wasn't born until more than 10 years after the Civil War ended.
Notes for Lovina Amanda Hackett:
Notes from Phyllis Codling: Uncle Lawrence was an engineer. He and Aunt Dorothy lived in Xenia for awhile. Don't know exactly when. He worked for the government somehow. Don't have that information right now. Grandma Codling was visiting them when she died in 1939. She had collapsed in a store nearby without any identification. No one knew who she was or who she was staying with. I don't know how they were notified. [end of notes]
Children of Charles Codling and Lovina Hackett are:
27 i. Eugene6 Codling, born 02 Aug 1903 in Gladwin, MI; died 1913 in Lake City, MI.
+ 28 ii. Iris M. Codling, born 21 Feb 1906; died 03 Oct 1991 in Austin, TX.
+ 29 iii. Lawrence Josiah Codling, born 18 Oct 1909 in Luther, MI; died 1999 in Oklahoma.
30 iv. Howard Kenneth Codling, born 17 May 1914 in Luther, MI; died 06 May 1986 in Del Ray, FL. He married Edith Jane Cady; born 03 Oct 1915 in Clymer, NY.
Notes for Howard Kenneth Codling:
Phyllis Codling told me that Howard and his wife had no children and that he died of lung cancer in April 1986 in Del Ray, Florida. In her notes [info from Phyllis in an e-mail dated 23 Aug 2001] it says his actual name on his birth certificate is Kenneth Wayne but according to Dolores Ann, he didn't like that choice and he was known as Howard Kenneth.
+ 31 v. Paul Emmett Codling, born 02 Feb 1917 in North Clymer, Chautauqua Co., NY; died 12 Jun 1994 in Convoy, OH.
14. Stephen Arthur5 Codling (Stephen4, Elijah3, Elijah2, John1) was born 09 Jan 1878 in Ontario, Canada, and died 15 Oct 1956 in Traverse City, MI. He married Winnie May Harrold 09 Oct 1907 in Gladwin, MI. She was born 02 Aug 1889 in Napoleon, Henry Co., OH, and died 13 May 1957 in Gladwin, MI.

They moved to Tennessee, then to Texas, where Trey attended college. She was very artistic, making egg scenes, tapestries, painting, etc. She always lived with Delores Ann and Trey. [This information was from Phyllis Codling's notes.]

She was born 01 Dec 1925 in Van Wert, OH, and died 04 Nov 2002 in Convoy, Danwert Co., OH.
Notes for Paul Emmett Codling:
During a phone conversation Phyllis Codling told me that her father lived in Riverdale, Maryland and then moved to Ohio. He had three daughters, one of them being Phyllis.
Her notes about her father: When he was young, sometime between age 3 and 7, but unsure when exactly, he had a nearly fatal accident. He was playing on a stack of telephone pole logs that tumbled and rolled over him. He was in a coma for a while but recuperated fully.
One of his stories was his effort to save money to go to college. He was raising chinchilla rabbits (his term) and someone stole them from him. He also had an opportunity to go to GE Tech School in New York State but Uncle Howard placed the letter underneath a stack of other mail and no one found it in time. The offer expired.
When he was living in Cleveland, married to Helen, he owned and operated a gas station. One day he found a batch of baby squirrels whose mother had been killed. They were up in the street lamppost. He took them home and tried to nurse them back to health. All of them died but one, which was his constant companion for a while. Dad said it would run up to him when he came home from work, sit on his shoulder and chatter in his ear. It would sit on his shoulder while he frove his car and when he went into stores. One day, he said, someone left a window open and the squirrel got loose. He never saw it again.
He also was a bus driver in Cleveland.
After Helen died, he went to Florida to live with Charles and Florence in either Jacksonville or New Smyrna. He was driving a Crosley station wagon and decided to go to California. He stopped in Washington, D.C., to visit Uncle Howard and Aunt Jane. They introduced him to Mom. She worked with Aunt Jane as a secretary for the U.S. Coast Guard. That was the end of his plans to go to California!
While they lived in Maryland, Dad worked for Aetna Insurance and also at a couple of factories. When they moved to Ohio in 1966, Dad worked first at Magnavox in Ft. Wayne. He got laid off a few years later, then worked for Kennedy Tool Boxes in Van Wert. He and Mom bought a laundromat, the B&C Laundry on East Main Street in Van Wert and operated that for a few years. I used to go out with him on pick-ups and deliveries. I remember a Mrs. Wall who had a lot of cats and an old black gentleman who lived in a big, blue house next to Aeroquip, now gone, that always had a sign saying Episcopalian Church.
Not long after they sold the laundromat, Dad got a job at Sims Cabs in Payne, where he worked until his retirement at the age of 65. He got Steve Miller a job there, and as of 1997 Steve still works there.
In D.C., he used to be a member of a Masonic Temple. He attended meetings at the one in Van Wert, but I don't think he joined. [End of Phyllis's note.]

Letter from Glenn: Ionia, Mich. 3/15/42
Dearest Mom and Dad,
Received your card yesterday and was so sorry [so sorry underlined] to hear that Dad seems to be no better, and you have made plans to have him sent to the hospital. Sure wish I could see him before he leaves but it is so hard to get up there now but maybe I should of went up anyway. All we can do is hope and pray that it will be for the best now. I know you have done waht you seem to be best Mom and I'm behind you 100%. I guess I'm kinda cheap for not coming up and helping you long ago. But I called up Sat as you know. (wish you would of been there) and talk to Dot and as you had already completed plans as where to send him, so didn't see any need of coming up. Unless to see Dad. Dot didn't tell me where he is going and I didn't ask. Where is he? Don't worry Mom just put your trust in God Mom, and he'll help you. I've bound it out that way and remember Mom I'm really behind you in hopes and preayer [prayer underlined]. And if you need me don't be afraid to call and I'll come if at all possible.
We are all O.K. here. Sharon is cutting teeth. I guess she's sorta cranky at times and bound to chew everything.
I guess I told you the other man is leaving at least by May 1 or as soon as the Boss can get a new man. He don't know what he is going to do. Whether to get in factory or rent a farm. The Boss offered him 15 dollars a wk and a few other extras but he refused. I may ask him for a little raise myself but may not get it.
We were to church and Sunday S this morn.
You really had snow up there didn't you according to the picture in the Record.
Sharon weighs 15 1/2 lbs. now.
Well Mom I guess I'm out of news. Will close with my thots almost constantly on you and your trials.
Ans soon. [Underlined three times) Praying for the Best
Your Loving son
Glenn, Ida May

Dearest Mom, Dad & All:
Well how are you on this hot day. At least it is pretty warm here. It is around 80 or 85 today. This place is all sand and scruf trees. Airplaines fly around here all the time. I don't know where they come from. Must be a aviation cadet training camp somewhere near this one. I went to Bible Study and worship service from 10 til 12 this morning. The Caplain is a really nice fellow. He don't preach any ? class sermon but strictly Bible.
Everybody is getting sunburn. My lips are chapped is all thats wrong with me so far except my muscles are pretty sore in my back and legs from doing calisthentics.
For chow this noon we hat scraps of turkey with noodles, cinnamon rolls, lettuce salad, coffee, shoot I forgot what else it wasn't much anyway. I can't say I'm so crazy about this army chow.
They issued our packs today. Well I had to leave in a hurry they called chow and I was laying in my bed half naked writing and I really had to hurry to get there in time. They have it a bit earlier on Sunday nites and I didn't know it. I wouldn't of missed much if I had of missed it just little bit to eat. If anybocy says the army has all the food they're nuts. I haven't had any to much since I been here. And I'm not the only one griping about it nearly all of us are.
This Battalion is a brand new one in the army they just started it. I found out on my I.Q. test that I made good enough to qualify for officers candidate shcool when there is an opening. But I doubt if I'll try for it if I do get the chance. A Buck Private is good enough for me.
Well I guess I had better close and finish my letter to Ida May and mail these letters then shave and by 6:30 I want to go to the chapel to see some pictures on the Holy Land and its now 5:30 so I have really got to step on it, haven't I. Loads of Love, Your Son & Bro., Glenn

Hi Mom,
Nothing to do today but sit around. Can't go to church. Was just waiting to get shipped. Now probably Mon. or Tues. will be shipped out and maybe not for a month. One never knows anything here. Wrote a couple cards to Ida May. Well the boys are waiting for me. Ellis and Carl, so will close.
With love, Your son,
Glenn

Dearest Mother, Dad & All:
Well its Sunday again. Didn't get any mail today only a card from Aunt Bertha Huffman. We got our Bible today and was busy all day til 4:30 cleaning that ???. Think didn't even get a chance to go to church. Plan on going tonight.
How is everybody anyway. I'm feeling O.K. considering. How did you make out on the horses. Good I hope. This camp covers 1600 acres but for my part it all isn't worth a small piece of Mich. I can't think of much to write not anything to write about. Anything but training. I'm getting over being so sore. My arms are a little sore got ? [may be a 7] shots in one day. How are you making out on your job Dad. Today the weather is cold & windy. Yesterday hot & dry. Mostly hot down here. My training will sure be hard in this hot place. Letter written by Glenn dated Apr. 08, 44, to his parents and siblings:
Dearest Parents, Bro. and Sisters:
Its Sunday and a gloomy dark day here. It has been trying to rain. Yesterday we were out to the anti-aircraft rifle range and it started to rain and I mean rain. We kept right on shooting until it just got so bad that they decided we couldn't keep it up. We were 5 miles from the company area so we really got wet. Ive been all day drying clothes and my stuff in my pack. What a job it was to clean that rifle, all sand and wet. We had our training on the rifle range this week. I did pretty fair. I was among the best I guess. I got sharpshooters metal. I guess there was 13 or 15 out of the 275 in this co. that were better than I was. I done better than I tho't. Carl Behnke won $6.75 in his co. They put 25 cents in a pool and whoever was the best shot got 1st prize 2nd etc. He got 2nd prize in his co. so he really was good. So us boys from Gladwin didn't do to bad. The other boys from there got Marksman metals. That's the lowest metal first is Marksman then Sharpshooter, then Expert. I believe if I could of had a little more practice I could make Expert. If I could of done a little better on slow fire I would of got it because on rapid fire, that is you need to fire 9 shots in 51 seconds which at 300 yeds is quite a job. I got 80 pts. out of 90 but on slow fire I only got 85 pts out of 120. It seems the longer I'd aim at the target on slow fire I got worse so if I'd get another chance which I won't I'd just pull up and shoot quicker. Boy I really was scart I couldn't make Sharpshooter metal. I had 2 shots left and I was firing on the 500 yd line which is a long ways. Over a 1/2 of a mile and I needed 2 bulls eyes to make Sharpshooter and I really got down there and tryed and I'll be blame I made it. Was I ever lucky I guess. And yesterday shooting at airplanes targets going in the air past you on a wire I got 7 hits out of 20 shots which is pretty good for hitting airplanes I guess. At least they say it is. Well I've bragged enough.
How is everybody. Hows your hands Mom. Did you get the fence all made Dad.
I couldn't go to church very handy. Today was busy getting clothes dry and besides we were on the alert that is our Battlion was suppose to be all ready to go anywhere in case of a riot or flood. You know it was just practice but we couldn't go anywhere much so I stayed HOME. ha ha.
Tomorrow we are starting to fire the bazooka and the grenade launcher. The grenade launcher fits right on your rifle. Boy does it ever kick. But the bazooka is a gun by itself.
I got a letter from Bob B. this week. I imagine he is on his way across because it was postmarked c/o postmaster N.Y. Faith soons haven a birthday don't she, time really flys but it seems a long time since I been to Gladwin. The Corporal called me Abe Lincoln yesterday and now the boys are calling me Abe. Well must close and get to writing to Faith. I also owe Grace I think and I got one from Aunt Sylvia and Bernice so have plenty to do on my Sundays.
Lots of Love,
Glenn

Dearest Mom, Dad & All:
Happy Easter. Here it is Easter and that makes them good ole eggs & the trimmings that go along with it. Carl B. & I went to church today then we went over to the 56 Bv to try and find Bill C. Found where he slept but that was all. I missed chow & mail call this noon by going over to hunt him. The boys said I had 3 or 4 letters. Well since I wrote that about Bill C. I was called down to the orderly room and Bill was calling me up form over in the 56 Bv. So Carl & Ellis and I going over tonight and see him. I guess he is on special duty on the Service Club. Sure hope you get that exema (?) fixed up for good Mom. Well it sure is a warm day here today. I can't seem to think of anything to write except train & more training. I am standing it all right so far only 3 or 5 have passed out out of this barracks so far. 64 in 1 barracks. A lot of fellows are sick tho'. Well Mom its nearly time for chow so will have to close. I guess awful small letter isn't it. I got one from Grace & Faith yesterday to. With loads of love, Just your Son, Glenn

Ida May sent a telegram to Glenn letting him know of Vance's birth. It reads: "Your son arrived 5:40 AM, 8 pounds 8 ounces. Both fine. Love, Ida May 9:12 AM." Glenn hand wrote on the telegram and returned it to her. His note reads, "Keep this money so we can look at it in later life ---- I hope. Love, Glenn" I don't know how much he sent but the message is sad in retrospect. At that time he was still in training at Camp Wolters in Texas.

Darling Mother:
Well Mom its "Mothers day" and you are more precious than ever to me. I think of what you have meant to me. How you used to fix up my hurts I recall how you used to hitch old Ben up and go to town. How we kids would watch the buggys coming down Riley hill till be saw old Ben & you. How I'd run to the old wooden gate to open it. I remember I run down there one time you came home with your hair fixed. Now I used to comb your nice long hair. I'm sure glad Mom you taught me right from wrong to go to church. I really appreciate it here in the Army. Dn't think I say these things because I'm lonesome (altho I am) but I really have tho't these things many many other times and there pleasant tho'ts to a boy to think of his sweet Mother. I'll never forget how you always would recite those good old poems while we sat and watched you iron with them old irons, and many other things cross my mind to numerouse to emntion.
How is everything this hot day. I'm Ok.K. There's only 4 or 5 other guys here and they are play craps, whatever that is with dice. Anyway I don't pay much attention to it.
I scribbled a line or two to Mike last nite at the Service Club. He really writes a nice letter. Sure like to get them. Be sure he keeps it up. How is Dad these days. Hope O.K.
I saw Carl and Cecil this morning at church. They said hello and that's all. Sure act funny. I'm all alone now. Nobody to go to church with even.
Walt Bard's brother came to spend the weekend with him. He is stationed over in Oklahoma.
I suppose you'll be shearing sheep pretty soon. I wrote Faith, Grace & Dot a letter so have got plenty to write, also Aunt Sylvia and Bernice.
Well Uncle Bill died. He will be misse by all of us. He sure was a jolly fellow in spite of his handicap of being nearly blind.
Well Mom I guess I'd better close and start on some other letters.
Next week we fire the (B.A.R.) Browning Automatic Rifle. It's a heavy rifle 15 lbs. It fires real fast.
So long Mom. Your Loving Son, Glenn

Well I'm in France and the Port I'm in right now is really beautiful to my estimation. Sure saw some awful destruction from the war coming here. Right at present all we are doing is sitting around waiting for things to happen. Probably will start some training soon. Possibly the real McCoy one never knows. I haven't had mail for so long and they talk like it won't catch up with us very soon either. Really been moving. Saw England briefly in the dark. was plenty sick on the way across part of the time. Carl & Walt are still with me. I've got my tent pitched with Carl. Boy sure cold at night sleeping out. Live on rations. Really would appreciate a good warm meal but this is probably a picnic to what we will be doing in the maybe not to distant future. Well must close with oceans of love. From Your Son & Bro.

Dearest Soldier Son,

Dad is home and we got everyting in the basement now but the cabbage and are going to put it in today. The weather here is still nice for this time of year. Frosty nights but nice in the day time.
Ida May and babies are O.K. Dot was there for supper last night then came to church.
Melvin was supposed to come home this week but he is sick in Hospital with pneumonia some of the boys wrote to their folks and told them to let his folks know. No one has heard from him for nearly a week guess the boys didn't get furlough but were sent to California.

Well here I come again and I hope you get it. Have you gotten any mail yet. I got three letter from you last week and I was sure glad to get them. Thanks a lot son for thinking of me and taking time to write to me. Sometimes I wonder if I am worthy of all your thoughts believe me I try to be and I don't know what I would do if I didn't hear from you sometime. We are OK here. Dad is home this week. We are going to put the potatoes in the basement today. And try and get things fixed up around here this week some. It has been real cold here the last few nites. There wasn't very many at Harriets shower Sat. nite. I don't know much what the football boys are doing this year as they don't put it in the record. Pete Lenton was killed last week in an auto crash. His mother sure has her troubles. Lyle Underwood has been shipped out somewhere. The meetings here at the church are pretty good I guess. I haven't been over yet but Dot was. Melvin is expected to come home this week some time. Well Glenn I must get to work. Remember me always in your prayers and thoughts and don't lose your faith in God. And we are thinking of you lots.

Dear Soldier Son,
Well Glenn it is election day here in the good old U.S.A. I went over and voted hope I did it right. I would vote for a yellow dog if I thoiught it would end the war and bring you boys all back home even if we had to go thru another depression, well Son how are you? Have you got our mail yet. Sure hope you have. We are O.K. here. Harriet and Art was here for dinner Sunday. They are fine she said she had written you and sent you some pictures. Faith calls everyday to see if I have heard from you. It is 17 days since we heard from you. Not too long I supose but seems like a long time to us.
Ida May just called. They are O.K. She said Vance was setting in the high chair smiling at her. He sure is a sweet boy. Grace writes that the twins are both walking now.
Next week is deer season here and suppose lots will be going.
Dot is going to work in town next week at Ed Walters doing housework and taking care of a 4 yr old boy. She was supposed to go to dime store but got this other chance so thought she would be farther ahead to take this other as she will get $12 a week, room & board and she would only get $15 at the store so she would only have $3 for room & board.
Uncle Dewey was here this A.M> said they had had two letters from Bob this morning. He wanted your address again. Thought he would write you and then he mihgt be able to locate you sometime.
Uncle Dewey is going to wire our barn so we can have litghts out there. I have got used to the lights in the house. Seems like there isn't any light out there now with the lantern.
I have to go to town this afternoon. Am getting a window in the car.
Melvin hasn't got home yet and we don't know if he will or not.
Well son, I must close now and eat my dinner. Hope you get this. Will be thinking of you at all times and praying that you are kept safe. Don't give up hope and above all Glenn don't lose your faith in your God. He is the only one that can help you now. Lots and Lots of Love from your Mom.

Gladwin County Record 11/29/1944
Killed in France
PFC. Glenn D. Anderson, 26, of Gladwin, who was reported missing in France on October 8th, has since been reported killed in action on October 13th, according to word received by his wife last week.
Son of Mr and Mrs David Anderson, of Sage township, Glenn was born here on May 24, 1918. He was graduated from the Gladwin High School in June of 1936. On December 7, 1940, he was married to the former Miss Ida May Codling, of Gladwin. He was an active member of the Riley Evangelical Church and was superintendent of the Sunday School there at the time of his induction into the army. He worked at the Gladwin Flouring Mills here before entering service.
Following his induction into the Army on March 16, 1944, he was sent to Camp Walters, Texas, where he received 17 weeks of basic training. He was given a 14-day furlough which he spent here with his family and then was sent to Fort Meade, Maryland, where he remained until he embarked for service overseas about September 1st. [End of Obituary]
----------------------------------
The last pictures we have of Glenn were taken during his visit to Gladwin in August 1944 before he shipped out. We don't know where his exact journey started in France but we know he died in Sivry, France, which is near the eastern border and near Germany. Sivry is approx. 50 miles south of Nancy, France in the area of Metz. He was in the Patton Army which would eventually engage in the great 'Battle of the Bulge.'
Glenn was in the Third Army, 317th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division. He was in Company L according to a 'notice of change of address he sent to his parents. It was dated Aug. 23, 1944. Glenn Anderson's records were destroyed in a fire in St. Louis, MO along with many other's military records.
He is buried in the Lorraine American Cemetery, Saint-Avold, France, which is the largest American World War II cemetery in Europe and not far from where he was killed. A replica of the cross over his grave in France was commissioned by Vance and placed in the Anderson family plot of Ridge Cemetery as a memorial for Glenn. Glenn's parents, sister, grandparents and aunt are all buried in the family plot. Vance and Kathy have a family plot near the original family plot.
When we were in France at the cemetery, we found the grave of another man, Bernard Glen Ross, who was killed around Oct 3-6, 1944. He was with Co. G in the same Regiment and Infantry Division as Glenn.

BRABYN, CARBENO, MITCHELL, SHAW, WALL posted by Kyle Johnson on Saturday, July 4, 1998
Services Thursday for Wm. Shaw Services will be held Thursday at 2 P.M. at the Hall funeral Home in Gladwin for William Shaw, 57, well-known Gladwin barber, who died suddenly at his home here Sunday following a heart attack. Gladwin business places will close from 1:45 P.M. to 3:15 for the services. Mr. Shaw's death Sunday came as a shock to the hundreds of folks throughout the county who have known and respected him during the more than 35 years he was engaged in the barber trade in Gladwin. He was in apparent good health Sunday morning and had planned to go out to Pratt's Lake to look over a 40 acre plot of land on which he has set out evergreens during the pas few years. At about 11 A.M. he returned to his home, however, and complained to Mrs. Shaw of shortness of breath. She immediately went to the Gladwin Hospital to summon Dr. K. D. Coulter. When she returned home less than five minutes later, he had passed away. Bill", as he was known to everyone, was a favorite with young folks as well as old. He had a way with youngsters; they loved him; and back in the days before rationing, a candy bar went with every hair-cut at Shaw's. He first started barbering here back in 1906 with Ross Huffman. He later was associated at different times with William White and Tom Moore in the barber trade here. In 1930 he opened his own shop in Gladwin with his sons Kenneth and Wilbur. Wilbur went to work for the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, but Kenneth has continued the association with his father in the barber shop. The son of Robert and Lucy Shaw, Bill was born in Mitchell, Ontario, on December 4, 1885. He came to this country in 1906 and settled in Gladwin. He was married to Harriet Carbeno, of Gladwin, on August 23, 1910. Surviving are Mrs. Shaw; two sons, Kenneth and Wilbur, of Gladwin; five grandchildren; two brothers John and Orben of Flint; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred Wall and Mrs. Lola Brabyn, and Hazel, of Detroit; and Mrs. Mitchell, of Ontario. Bill was an active member of the Gladwin I O O F Lodge and Encampment. He was a member of the Gladwin County Rationing Board, and also served as a member of the Gladwin County Draft Board. He was always active in the affairs of the Gladwin County Fair Association and served several terms on the Board of Directors. The Rev. Perry Hoover, of the Beaverton Chruch of the Brethern, will officiate the services Thursday afternoon. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, Gladwin. Notes for Monty Rollin Codling:
The following was found via a Google search. It is cut and pasted as it appeared online. What a fine tribute to her father.
http://www.yourtruehero.org/content/hero/view_hero.asp?31487
Monty Codling
My hero was not always that. In fact for most of my life I did not understand the personal tragedies that he over came to be there for me. My father, Monty Codling, is a mild mannered man. He is as gentle and soft spoken as they come. Underneath this soft seeming façade lives the heart of the kindest and most considerate person I know.
My father's story is one of personal triumph over disease and mental adversity. He was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when he was nineteen years old. This prevented him from attaining his first dream, which was to enter the Air Force and become a pilot. Instead he turned to the collage scene and studied Mathematics. He received his AA.
This is where his life took a twist. He had met my mother and started a family before he received his BA. He left his known life in Texas to move to South Florida. The move was due to my mother's medical condition, arthritis. With my mother unable to work, no family support, and no friends in sight it was up to my dad to support the family.
Since he had new responsibilities he worked two and sometimes three jobs to feed this young family. At the height of his workaholic period, he made time to be at my sporting events. He sat down in the few moments he had at home to show my multiplication table. I was never without the new dress for a dance or allowance for a school trip. It is only recently that I can see the sacrifices he had made.
In this span of 6 years, his bed-ridden mother came to live with us after the death of his father. His devotion to her was evident. The three months, before her death was spent by her side, it almost seemed that he did not sleep.
The stress of working multiple jobs, family obligations, and a later divorce caused a major onset of the Multiple Sclerosis. It was also the cause behind a nervous breakdown. Unable to work and virtually alone my father sat in silence. He checked himself into a hospital for mental and physical wellness. He did not ask for help. He expressed the need to get well through time and medical care.
Later, when he was trying to piece together his life I was old enough and stable enough to offer him a place in my home. He accepted on the terms that he carries his own, without charity. In the 5 yrs we have lived together I have been privileged to know the man that is my father. He has never looked back on his life and wondered "what if." What if he had not provided for his children? Would he still be in better health?
The inspiration that his is to me now is not measurable in words or emotion. After 30 years away from school he is taking classes part time. He has shared with me his new dream to become a Math teacher. After a life riddled with drawbacks and heartache Monty continues with out every placing blame on others, always offering a smile, and reaching out to those in need
I am proud to be my father's daughter and only hope I can be as inspirational in my life as he has been in his.

Notes for Vance Glenn Anderson:
Vance was born May 5, 1944. His father had been drafted earlier in the spring of that year and was away when he was born. In August of that year, when Vance was just a few weeks old, his father came home on leave before being shipped to France as an infantryman. That was to be the only time they were together and the pictures of being held in his father's arms are precious. His father was killed in action on Friday, October 13, 1944 not long after arriving in France.
His mother continued to raise her two children, Sharon and Vance, and received help with the children from her sister, Helen, and Vance's father's family. Vance spent quite a bit of time with his Aunt Faith and Uncle Horace Griffith on their farm and he has great memories of those visits.
When Vance was 6 his mother remarried a man named Ernie Stellmacher who would help raise him until adulthood. They moved to Midland and Vance transferred from Gladwin schools and remained in the Midland schools until graduating in June 1962.
While growing up, Vance worked a paper route for a while. He used some of his earnings to purchase a two wheeled bicycle.
At 16 Vance was involved in an auto accident the accounts of which appeared in the Midland newspaper;
Admitted to Midland Hospital Sunday afternoon were Vance G. Anderson 16, of 2385 Wackerly road, and Gloria McHenry, 16, of Saginaw. Anderson suffered forehead cuts and a fractured right leg while Miss McHenry received a fractured left ankle and chin lacerations. Hospital officials said both were in satisfactory condition today.
Also injured in the same crash was Aaron McHenry, 41, of 1999 Sturgeon road. He was treated at the hospital for a fractured nose plus facial cuts and bruises. McHenry and Miss McHenry were passengers in a car driven by Anderson.
According to the sheriff's department, the one car crash occurred on Eastman road, about three miles north of Midland. Anderson told deputies he was driving north on Eastman and lost control of the car on some ice and slush. The car went off the road and into a ditch. The vehicle was wrecked, sheriff's officials said. ...End of article
The car was owned by his step-father, Ernie. Vance later took the engine out of that car and put it into another. He did this while still on crutches from his injuries. He had required surgery on his leg which included having rods through his legs during the healing process.
Vance was involved in band and orchestra throughout junior and senior high school. He particularly enjoyed those activities related to his music. He talks fondly of a trip to Chicago and of playing in the Midland Symphony which was almost all adults. Vance's instrument was the tuba.
Vance was tall and slender and according to his sister, Sharon, a bit of a hit with her friends. He dated several gals throughout high school but then married his senior year girlfriend, Pat Bolen, a peer band member who played the flute, when they were both 19 years old.
Vance had received encouragement from his government teacher in his senior year which gave him the desire to go on to college. He first attended Saginaw Valley College and then transferred to Central Michigan University where he received a Bachelors degree in 1966 and his Masters in Business Administration in 1968. He worked his way through as a meat cutter at Brownie's Market for six years in Midland and one summer as a truck driver for 4-D Builders. His wife, Pat, worked as a secretary at Dow Chemical. It was with great perseverance and dedication that he was able to work and go to school full time to get this valued education.
He interviewed with a few companies including Shell Oil and Dow Chemical but selected Consumers Power Company's offer. He joined them in February 1968 and was known as one of "Bishop's Bullets." He was hired by Dick Bishop in the Customer Service Department where these young new graduates were put on an entry program that allowed them to move around the company quickly and learn the business.
The Company endured a strike in 1969 which helped Vance's career significantly. His strike duty was in the Gas Customer Service Department and he learned the service business inside and out. He soon began to move up through increasingly responsible supervisory positions. At 28, he became a superintendent over many men, all of which were younger than him. Through those years he worked in Jackson, Kalamazoo, Livonia, Jackson again and then Lansing.
When in Livonia, he bought his first house and he and Pat started their family. Little golden haired Kelly was born August 14, 1970. She was the apple of her daddy's eye and extremely precocious. Three years later, his little cute, Erin was born on February 18, 1974. She twisted daddy around her little finger just as quickly as Kelly had. Vance was a dedicated family man who loved his daughters and was and is still a guiding force for them both. He read to them, took them camping and for rides on his motorcycle. He was a balance for them where they got unconditional love and support.
In 1984, Vance's mother became very ill and died in March of kidney disease and a month later his Grandma Anderson died. Later that year in September, he encountered another loss when Pat decided that she wanted a divorce. They had been married for 22 years. His most difficult struggle was the splitting up of the family. The girls got to choose which parent to live with and Kelly chose to live with her father. Erin decided to remain with her mother but her choice was difficult. She maintained constant contact with her father by spending most weekends with him and occasional evenings during the week through the next several years. Though it was difficult for them all, he managed to keep his love for his daughters at the forefront of his priorities.
The winter following their separation, he and I (Kathy), began to talk occasionally and get together with our peers at Consumers Power when they had get togethers like birthday celebrations. We had known each other through work for about three years but had not had much contact in nearly a year. I was shocked in February when I found out from a coworker that he was getting divorced.
Eventually in early April, he decided to ask me out. Our first date was an impromptu motorcycle ride on a Sunday afternoon, April 6, 1986. Vance had not dated anyone else during the time of his separation until then. We began to see each other regularly and by June we were an exclusive "item." In late July we were engaged and got married, September 6, 1986, five months to the day after our first date.
We have been married happily ever since and enjoy our family and friends in united fashion. His friends are mine and vice versa and the same is true of our families. Thanksgiving is a time when we particularly enjoy our time together with family and sometimes including friends.
Vance is a multi-talented and interesting man. He loves to cook, ride a motorcycle, fix things, and listen to music. He is well educated and has had a good career but he is as down to earth as can be. He relates well to everyone and is willing to help when needed. He is a true friend and remains the utmost in dedicated family man.
Vance's career at Consumers Power Company began immediately following his graduation with a Masters Degree from Central Michigan University. He began in customer service as one of "Bishop's Bullets" which is what the group of graduates were called that were brought in and circulated through various assignments and were on a fairly rapid career path. His first assignment was in General Office in Jackson, MI.
He then went out to the line organization to Kalamazoo, then Livonia, back to Jackson, then to Lansing. In 1983, he returned to Jackson as the functional head of gas customer service and with responsibility for the gas training center. He held that position for several years.
In 1993, he was chosen among several top candidates, to head up a new venture into alternative fuel vehicle programs with the mainstay being compressed natural gas. Vance was instrumental in gaining support in State and Federal legislative bodies and in starting up the Michigan CNG Coalition, becoming their first Chairman. He also worked with the gas companies to establish an infrastructure of CNG stations throughout Michigan and was successful in getting 20 set up. Vance also worked with the automobile companies to encourage them to build CNG vehicles. This was the hardest part because the automobile companies couldn't see a profit without legislation driving the buyers to purchase the cars and the legislators weren't pushed by environmentalists and the gas companies were somewhat hesitant to build CNG stations until there were lots of users. Therefore, the future of CNG's was a slow developing venture and eventually, it became apparent that Vance had done all he could to build the business any further given current conditions inside the company and in the market.
On October 1, 1997, Vance was named Electric Field Manager for Kalamazoo and Allegan service territories. After nearly 30 years in the gas business, he moved into the electric side of the business. He is responsible for the line and service work as well as new business development for those areas with management responsibility for approximately 120 employees and 130,000 customers. Ten percent of his responsibilities are for community involvement.
In September 1999 Vance was transferred to the comparable position for the Northern area which includes the service areas of Boyce City, Cheboygan, Gaylord and Houghton Lake (and all the area between those headquarters). His office is in the town of Houghton Lake. This allowed him to move to our home in Gladwin in anticipation of my retirement the following summer in 2000.
Effective May 15, 2002 Vance was given the position of Manager Production Services which places him over all the technical training and other technical support services for the Electric SBU. His office is in Midland, Michigan but has employees in several cities across Michigan including Muskegon, Marshall, Midland and others. For a couple months he maintained his Electric Field Manager position pending his replacement in that job. Vance retired effective August 1, 2003 after 35 1/2 years service to Consumers Energy Co.
Vance was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in early December 2007. It is a terminal disease of the lungs. He was treated for three years for the effects of the disease and was accepted to be placed on the lung transplant list in early December 2010. If he got one, it could possibly give him awhile longer to live. He did received a transplant on December 18, 2010, at Cleveland Clinic and came through surgery just fine. However it wasn't long before complications began to take their toll including two severe rejections, kidney failure, A-Fib and others. Vance succumbed to the rejection issues on February 17, 2011, while still in Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio.

E-mail from Erin dated 14 July 2006:
Hi everyone!
I just wanted to pass along some great news we received in the mail the other day regarding Jake! Back in April he and the rest of his class entered a poetry contest with the American Literacy Council's 2006 Student Poetry Contest judged by The America Library of Poetry, and they wrote him to tell him it is going to be published! It is now registered as a semi-finalist and will be judged for the final prizes (grand prize is a $500 US savings bond) and others like shopping sprees and VISA gift cards and other savings bonds. They will name the division winners and runners-up on September 30th, so I will let you know how he does! His poem is titled "There's a Fedmed Under My Bed" and is somewhat reminiscent to Dr. Suess-type stuff! Very cute! The best part is that they are going to publish his poem in a book titled EXCELLENCE that is scheduled for publication in the fall along with other children's unique poetry. The book can be purchased at a reduced rate ahead of time, if anyone is interested in getting one, let me know. If you want more information, check out their website at www.libraryofpoetry.com I would assume at some point his poem may be available online to view as well! We are very proud of him and of course he is very excited to even be considered, so I wanted to share this news with you all!

Samantha "Sammy" Filipich - 4 March 2008
R.J. Gator's Restaurant, The Villages
Notes for Samantha Paige Filipich:
We were both in attendance at the birth of Samantha. What a thrill to be there and share in such a wonderful experience with her Mom (Erin) and Dad (Matt). Sammy was born at a tiny 5 lbs. 15 ozs. and was approx. 18 inches long. There is a bit of question as she was first measured at 18 1/2 inches and a little later in the nursery they measured her at less than 18 inches. She is a darling baby with a sweet manner and cute little smile. She sleeps well for her folks which they seem to really appreciate. She spent her first Thanksgiving with us at our house in Sugar Springs, Gladwin, MI.
Email note from Erin dated 3 March 2004: Sammy is really chatting up a storm and learning new words all the time now! She loves pizza and fruit and playing with her big brother! She is turning into quite the little camera "ham" and loves animals. [end of note]
E-mail from Erin dated 7 Nov. 2006 [the day after Sammy's 4th birthday]: Sammy had a great birthday, she picked to go to McDonalds for her birthday dinner, so we did and the kids played and we went home for presents and cake! She loves the Dora Tree House, it is really cute! Large, but cute! LOL! Matt put it up in the living room just to see what it looked like and it took up the whole room! It is 5
feet tall! It is in the basement now and last night both kids got flashlights and played in the dark inside until bedtime! She also loved her art easel and art stuff we got her, she is at school now and all she wants to do the rest of the day is paint! LOL! She got a cute Dora checkers game and NickJr book set for beginner readers from Kelly and Jeff and the kids, and a pretty winter dress and tights and some craft stuff from Tracie and a hillarious singing duck thing from Nana that sings the "If you're happy and you know it" song and dances! She thought she was queen for the day for sure! She kept saying "I can't believe I am four already! I have never been 4 before!" It was so cute! [end of note] [The Dora Tree House was our birthday gift to her.]
