Features
This yacht is being designed for a client who requested the 'concept' be similar to the very tried and proven Falmouth Quay Punt. The Quay Punt was used to service Windjammers in the days without auxiliary power and so a vessel was required that could not only carry cargo but perform well on coastlines that are not always hospitable. Usually they had a large ballast ratio and a similar ratio has been deployed, making a yacht that will have 180 degrees positive stability, the form stability of the trunk cabin contributing to this. A Junk rig was requested and one that was of sufficient sail area making it possible to sail in light airs without setting extra sail. With Twin keels the yacht could 'dry out' between tides when left on a mooring as is common in some regions of the world. Twin keels give lower draft and also it is claimed, dampen rolling motion. A multi chine is a deviation from the traditions of the Quay Punt but makes for a very practical yacht to build and the 'looks' by some, are preferred. The transom is open with closing doors and a step down to allow for easy boarding access. A sufficient battery bank will be installed so as to give adequate power for induction cooking, which has worked so well on the clients previous yacht. At least 4 solar panels will be fitted to supplement domestic power requirements.
It is a yacht that is very much intended to be rugged but attractive, safe and yet able to put many sea miles under her keel in a day. The Junk rig is a proven easy to handle low tech rig with very few highly loaded parts to fail after years of use. At the time of writing, it is intended that carbon fiber spars will be deployed.
The design will be available with different rigs at a later date. Being a amalgam of well proven characteristics of both the east and the west I have little doubt that when she plies the seas she will attract a lot of interest and why wouldn't she?
This design is now complete. It is available in with different layouts. 25/6/12
