Excretion

Excretion for just biology.pptx

Excretion is the process by which waste products of metabolism are removed from the body of living organisms. Metabolic activities in the body always produce waste which needs to be removed. These are carried out by special excretory systems and organs. There is a difference between Excretion and Egestion.

Egestion is the removal of solid undigested food substances which are not by-products of metabolic activities.

Secretion is the production of useful substances such as enzymes and hormones by metabolic processes in the body.

Importance of Excretion

  • The Excretory products are harmful to the body and so must be removed.

  • Some are poisonnous and must never be allowed to accumulate within the body

  • Water balance is maintained with the help of Excretion

  • Excretion helps to maintain salt balance in the body

  • Waste products can interfere with normal metabolic activities of the body, when not removed.
