Goal

Jungle Trolls is a team survival game.

You take the role of a troll in the wilderness, in a tribe of four.

First of all, you need to work together with your tribe-mates to survive in the harsh jungle. You will need to build a troll village together around your Tribe Totem and test yourself against the powerful beasts that lurk in the depths of the jungle. If your tribe survives its many challenges and the other tribes fail to survive, one way or another (even open all out war), you win.

Gameplay

Early in the game your main challenge is to keep your Troll in good shape: don't get him killed by dangerous beasts, find food for him and warm shelter to rest during the cold nights.

You mainly wander through the vast jungle looking for resources with which you can craft buildings and eventually weapons and clothes. Depending on your class you will find different solutions to your problems and the tribe will rely on you to perform different tasks.

Victory condition

You need to find place for your tribe's Totem and to build your village around to protect it. If your totem gets destroyed, you will lose the game.

When the Totem is built, it spawns an epic Guardian Beast which is different for each tribe. While it's alive, the Beast makes the Totem invulnerable and protects your village against danger. The Guardian's movement though is limited: it cannot leave the area of the Totem, or it will be teleported back.

Use your Guardian to clear the place for the future village... And to provide you with free starting resources

Choosing a Troll

According to your playing style or mood you can choose between four hero classes. Each of them can be played in one way or another, having strengths and weaknesses.

Warrior

Powerful, slow and durable, he is the best melee fighter among the trolls. Deals great damage in close combat. Good in harvesting of resources - crushing rocks, cutting trees and bushes.

Hunter

Agile, cunning and subtle. Best survivor among the trolls, best in hunting beasts and finding resources in the jungle. Uses traps, bows and stealth to surprise his prey. Can tame animals and has unique pets which can earn experience in battles.

Inventor

Sharp and quick mind put to a practical use. Employs mechanics and explosives to create strange devices and weapons. Best in dealing mass damage. Can invent hidden item recipes which are useful to the whole tribe. Able to use powerful guns, explosives and some unique mechanical weapons.

Shaman

Wise and scary, he is the master of Voodoo. Can heal wounds and even cure poisons and diseases. Has great knowledge of herbs. Can revive dead creatures as rotten zombies under his command. Can use up to two books of Voodoo magics to support his tribe or painfully kill the enemy. Able to use the magic staff or wand, and a blowpipe.

Survival

The first enemy you will need to resist is nature itself.

Survival tips for your first steps in the troll jungle:

• Gather resources - if you find something in the jungle and it doesn't try to kill you, take it. When you decide where your base will be, bring all things there.

• Keep away from beasts - these are not creeps in some action game. If you have no weapon, do not try to fight them.

• Satisfy your hunger - watch your Food value (up right, in the place of Gold). The Food value slowly decreases all the time at a constant rate and can be increased by eating fruits, meat, herbs, bones and whatever you can digest. You should prefer cooked food, for it provides better bonuses. Eating raw meat or bones can make you puke, losing food points instead of gaining them, or choke for a health loss. If Food value decreases to 0-50, you will begin to starve, losing health fast. You need to increase your Food by eating, or else you will die soon.

• Be prepared for the cold nights - watch your Heat value (up right, in the place of Wood). At day the sunshine increases slowly your Heat value, but when the night comes, it will begin to decrease fast. In addition, the weather affects Heat: being wet at night decreases it fast, snowing decreases it faster. A wind storm simply drains health over time. If Heat value decreases to 0-25, you will get cold: slowly losing health, moving 25% slower, attacking in Melee 25% slower, having a penalty to power hit Criticals. To restore your Heat value, light a fire in a Fire camp, build a Forge or simply run around, using the Panic skill (but remember that running spends Energy and Food faster).

Resting (auto-cast) restores your energy (mana). It is needed for using some abilities and weapon power attacks. Energy slowly decreases all the time at a constant rate. Resting on the ground at night quickly decreases your Heat; just the opposite, resting near a Tent or Hut increases Heat and regeneration.

• Keep your health - if your hit points drop to 0, you die.

Death

It is a survival game. Try not to die.

Already dead?

Okay, actually there is life after death. You become a Spirit, finally invulnerable to nature's punishment and normally invisible, seeing all. You can hover slowly around, scouting for your tribe and scaring some living fool from time to time. Well, that's with the good news. You cannot do anything else while you are a Spirit.

You should use this time to look for a way to come back to life:

  • You can revive once using your Spirit's revival ability - but it can be used only the first time and it needs a full day and night to charge, OR

  • pray for a Miracle in the Totem. The troll gods rarely award such blessings, therefore gaining their favor requires multiple sacrifices (meat, especially trollish; skulls; other foods) to recharge Totem's power.

Combat

Through combat you can finally inflict some pain of your own. In the Jungle you will fight beasts and enemy trolls... But also trees, mines, bushes etc. to gather basic resources from nature itself. Estimate your tasks well and choose the right weapon for it.

Resource Gathering

At game start and during the first game week some resources get scattered around the jungle at random and some plants grow at random:

  • basic resources: stone, tinder, flint, wood

  • herbs: aria, bardane, corian, draximor

  • mana stone

Other resources can be found at certain locations that produce them daily.

  • Four Oil Geysers on the map generate 1 Oil.

  • Caves generate some Gold.

  • Berry bushes and Herb plants on the map generate Berries and Herbs (they generate them faster when it's raining).

The most expensive resource in game - the Mana Stone

Resource Harvesting

Stone or Flint: there are deposits of these resources called Rocks and Hard Rocks. Deal damage to them and gather 1-3 of the respective resource plus 10% chance to find the precious Mana Stone.

Note: Blunt weapons (Clubs) deal great damage to structures which makes them great for mining.

Inventor's bombs could also be effective.

Animals deal only 10% damage to structures and mines.

Wood or Tinder: there are many trees and some tinder bushes on the map. To be able to cut them, you need an Axe. Every tree attacked and cut drops 1 wood, and every bush - 1 tinder.

Note: Some Inventor's explosives (bombs, Molotov cocktails) are useful for fast gathering of wood and tinder.

Herbs: find any herb and extract its Seeds. To be able to do that you should be a Shaman (special crafting) or you could use the Shaman Hut. Sow the seeds whenever you wish. They are grown when the energy of the plant is full. Then it will give fruit in the form of the corresponding herbs.

Gold: sell unneeded basic resources, herbs and animal resources (bones, skins) to the local Merchant Shop (basic troll structure) to get gold.

Rain aiding a bountiful garden

Weather

Unlike many other games, the atmospheric conditions in JTR do really affect the gameplay and have a real impact on everything you do. Weather changes happen randomly and vary in duration.

Corresponding to the chosen survival difficulty, bad weather decreases troll's heat every 3.0/2.5/2.0 seconds. When the survival difficulty is set to Hard, bad weather lasts longer and has a stronger influence to troll stats.

If heat becomes 0-25, the troll gets cold, loses some health and moves and melee attacks 25% slower until he recovers. The lower the heat under 25, the higher the Cold chance for 3 seconds (at 0 it's 100%).

Normal weather: trolls get +2 heat at day and -2 heat at night.

Rain: when it is raining trolls get wet, which makes them lose more heat and affects their melee attack with a 10% chance to slip and miss.

It extinguishes the fire in Fire Camp and doesn't allow trolls to light it again until it stops.

It makes plants grow: herbs and berry bushes get bonus growth and regenerate some health. A few herbs appear randomly on map in addition to normal spawn.

When raining, from time to time a thunder lightning has 25% chance to hit some random unit for 100-200 damage, otherwise it hits some random tree, making it dry. The dry tree looks different and if cut, it drops a special resource - petrified wood, witch can be used to craft some rare and powerful items.

Raining has some influence on fishing. The chance for catching a River Trout is increased by 10% while raining (and decreases by 5% the chance for Piranha and Frog). Only while raining there is 5% chance to catch a big fat Cattle Fish.

Snow: when it is snowing trolls get additionally -4 heat.

It slows plant growth: herbs and berry bushes lose growth.

Storm: the strong wind chills to the bones and trolls lose health.

It damages plants: herbs and berry bushes lose health.

Note: Resting also affects heat gain: while sleeping on the ground, trolls lose more heat (except Hunter). If resting near a Tent or Troll Hut, they do not lose heat over time and get bonus heat and energy.

Note: Running can be used to heat up - using the Panic or Berserk skill gives bonus heat to the troll, but costs him food and energy.

Note: Praying to the Troll Gods (by the Totem or with an Idol) allows you to control weather: you can bring for rain to make plants grow faster or a blizzard or a storm to hinder enemies.

Beasts

Depending of their diet there are four types of beasts:

- Herbivores: rabbits, antelopes, tortoises. Can be fed with herbs and fruits. Aggro level 1.

- Omnivores: raccoons, boars, crabs, bears, jungle birds. Can be fed with any food. Aggro level 2.

- Carnivores: spiders, wolves, alligators, snakes, vultures. Can be fed with meat and bones. Aggro level 3.

- Monsters: rotten animals revived by voodoo. Can be fed with meat and bones, and especially with troll meat. Aggro level 4.

The aggressiveness (aggro level) of an animal determines its behavior upon attack. The more aggressive animals are, the more likely it is for the animal to retaliate against an attack, change target or chase you off.

Some animals have special abilities - to smell, see or feel hidden units (wolves, snakes, piranhas), to trap you in place with pincers or webs (crabs, spiders), to carry diseases (mosquitoes, rats), to deliver poison (spiders, snakes), to be well protected (crabs, tortoises) or even to be very, very lazy (alligators, snakes).

When killed, the animals drop some resources:

- Crafting resources - skin, feathers, venom;

- Food - bone, meat, eggs.

Note: Eating of raw food is not recommended for a troll. If not cooked in Fire Camp or Cauldron, the raw meat can make your troll puke (losing food) or choke (losing health). Cooked meals also restore some health over time.

Breeding

The animals in the jungle can breed. Their energy usually serves their breeding ability.

The life cycle of an animal is a 3 stage progression:

Note: Every morning the energy of all animals, herbs and berry bushes is randomized a tiny bit.

1) A new cub or hatch-ling is born. Its energy slowly increases (1 per 10 sec) and when full after a few days, the beast grows. Cubs and hatch-lings are weaker. Their skin is not good for crafting (if killed, they drop no skin). Some animals lay eggs instead - you can tame the whole nest or destroy it to get the eggs.

Note: When eggs hatch, the beast that emerges cannot be tamed.

2) The grown animal is a young adult looking for a mate. It's energy slowly increases (1 per 10 sec) and when full after a few days, the animal usually has 60% chance to give birth to 1-3 cubs/hatch-lings or lay eggs. In the process it becomes even bigger.

3) The big animal is a full grown adult in its prime. It defends its offspring and offers a fearsome fight. It's energy slowly decreases though - it ages (1 per 10 sec) and when it reaches 0 after a few days, the old animal dies and drops no resources.\

There is a chance at some places of the jungle species to go extinct and at other places - big herds or packs of animals to be formed. When dealing with them caution is advised.

Note: If you are concerned about late game food resources, you should kill old animals and spare the cubs.

Taming

Troll Hunter can tame animal cubs, hatchlings or eggs. To do that he needs to hold the animal for some time - the net is great for that. If the Troll Hunter has learned the habits of the beasts - when and where they sleep, he can outsmart some of them and tame their young without a net.

Tamed beasts are practically the same as wild beasts but the Troll Hunter can feed them to cure their wounds and help them grow faster (level 1-2) or live longer (age slower - level 3). To feed an animal put the type of food it likes in its inventory and press the feed button (F) in the animal's skills.

Depending on its diet the animal can carry and eat the respective food. But certain animals (deers, tortoises and well trained hawks) have the skill Beast of Burden and are able to carry any items.

Note: Be careful not to attack your own animals. They will defend themselves (but they still obey you when you tell them to stop).

A good Hunter can breed himself an army

Voodoo Reviving (Zombies!)

This is Troll Shaman's use of dark Voodoo magics (healing and ghost form being light and shadow). This skill is in shaman's class crafting panel.

For the ritual the Shaman needs all the parts of a dead beast: bones, meat, skin, feather, shell, chitin etc. or even a skull. The final and most important ingredient is his own voodoo power needed to summon a spirit to inhabit the dead flesh. It can be seen as Shaman Crafting's mana amount and is being slowly gathered over time. Depending on the animal spirit the ritual can require different amount of Voodoo Power.

It lives again! Though it is not the same. The tortured spirit is obsessed with endless hunger for flesh to sustain its rotten body. It moves slower, has increased damage... and is evil. It has become a monster: highly aggressive and feeding with meat and bone. In addition, it is rotten (slowly loses health) and stinks, causing nearby units to feel bad (also lose health).

Rotten beasts cannot be poisoned or diseased.

Note: Rotten beasts cannot grow, give birth or die of old age.

Voodoo revival is not limited to beasts.

Rotten beasts are terrifying opponents

Rare Beasts (Bosses)

Some of the animals in the jungle were alive for so long they evolved. These elusive beasts show themselves rarely but are a sight to behold!

- Big Bad Wolf - a fierce white wolf, having 10% chance to eat a troll alive and to slowly digest him until he's dead.

- Grizzly Bear - a savage giant bear with great health, which can stun a troll senseless, allowing it to deliver another blow with its heavy paws.

- Giant Vulture - a great flying monster, which is able to avoid every 10 sec a spell, shot or net, that would normally pin it to the ground.

- Comodo Dragon - an enormous serpent, which is slow, lazy and dangerous. From time to time infects with malaria.

Note: Bosses are very powerful and usually require the whole tribe to work together to bring them down. Be well prepared!

Bosses drop plenty of resources and a special item - the heart of the beast. Eating the heart is an old Voodoo ritual aimed at acquiring part of the beast's power (bonus stats and passive abilities). Only one heart type per troll can be eaten.

Note: A Boss is more likely to appear in late game, but there is a small chance that one can emerge even on day 1. If so avoid its lair at all costs! You have been warned.

Crafting

Items can be crafted from basic resources such as stone, wood, skins/hides, bones, or from advanced goods such as rope, , bronze, iron and many more.

- Basic resources are found by wandering around the troll jungle and gathering them from the ground or from hunting beasts and surviving to tell the epic story.

- Advanced goods are made from basic resources either in the troll basic or class crafting or in a building.

Just read in description what kind of materials you need, gather them in inventory and press the crafting button. If you did something wrong, your troll will tell you how many materials of every type he needs.

Note: When crafting Inventions in the Workshop, there is a necessity to put materials in the correct order, as described in the corresponding recipe.

Slot 1 of your inventory is the top left box (you will use any item in it if you have Num Lock switched on and press 7 on the keypad), Slot 2 is the top right box, Slot 3 is on the second row - left side, etc..

Building a Troll Village

In order to survive, the troll tribe has to work together. Very early on you will have to decide on a spot to bring all your findings and build your basic survival related buildings - a camp fire and a tent (both built in basic crafting). Almost any place on the map can be used for your starting camp.

When choosing a place to build a permanent troll village keep a few things in mind:

- building a troll village next to a berry bush is always helpful;

- a troll village needs to be accessible so you can scout large portions of the jungle easily forresources;

- but it needs to be hidden and tucked out of the way so your enemies won't find it too easy andsteal your stuff or attack you;

- look for a tactical advantage over your opponents, a place you can defend well: narrow entrance, high ground or rock walls etc.;

- with access to water so you can use a boat or fish frequently;

- with plenty of space so you can build structures and keep hunter's animals safe while breeding;

- look for anything else that can help you at all.

Every class has access to the basic crafting skill and can build all the troll village structures. But staying at the troll village and building or crafting takes time. So usually one of the four trolls in a tribe stays at the troll village to build and craft while the rest gather food, resources and experience. Inventors do well at this since their skills don't require them to leave the camp as often. Shamans are a good second best.

Note: Remember not to stay too long at the village - wasting time.

When building a troll village you should consider what is best for the whole tribe and what resources are at your disposal. The most important buildings to get as fast as possible are:

- the Totem (the tribe starts with the Totem building kit) - provides your tribe with a permanent way to bring back to life the spirit of an unfortunate (dead) tribe mate, can heal wounds and cure poisons or diseases. Once built, it cannot be moved. The Totem is a victory condition and if you lose it, your whole tribe loses the game;

- a cauldron (built in Voodoo Hut) - lets you cook more types of food and raw meat better, requires Oil;

- a forge (built in Armory) - provides a permanent heat source, requires Oil;

- a storage barrel (built in Workshop) - keeps food, bone, furs and leathers fresh and safe (meat decomposes after a few days if left on the ground).

Note: Keeping your resources in storage barrels can also protect you against cunning neighbors.

After the essentials you should try to build the rest of the the four core buildings (all built in basic crafting) and craft some mid game items - a weapon, boots or other armor etc.

- a Voodoo Hut - lets you craft a cauldron, voodoo masks and shaman spell books, can also extract seeds for farming and imbue gloves and boots with magic;

- an Armory - lets you craft a forge, axes, clubs, throwing weapons and shields, can improve leather armors for extra defense;

- a Tannery - lets you craft fur and leather armors, spears, net and can pad fur armors for extra warmth;

- a Workshop - lets you craft a stockage barrel, tools - a repair hammer and a mining pick, torches, walls, towers, boats and siege machines, inventor guns, devices and invented recipes.

The rest of the basic structures (also built in basic crafting) are:

- a Merchant Shop - lets you trade resources for gold and with it buy the four basic resources - wood, stone, tinder, flint. If you conclude a trade agreement with the Voodoo Merchant in the middle of the map and bring it to the Merchant Shop you will be able to buy herbs and even oil and mana stone.

- a Troll Hut - provides the best possible rest (sleep) for your troll. A Tent made of high quality fur is a good alternative but it will never be as good as a Troll Hut. Also in late game trolls tend to take Tents with them on their longer journeys which can leave the rest of the tribe with no place to sleep in.

Defending your Troll Village

After you have chosen a nice place for the troll village and have built most of the structures and items you need the tribe can start sparing resources for defense.

The basic defense buildings are storage barrels (can be used as cheap wood wall), towers and stone wall. If you no longer use your fire camp a torch can provide a constant guard against stealthy enemies. Other tricks that could help:

- hunter's traps can be very useful;

- a tamed or voodoo revived giant tortoise can provide you with a solid door - or a tent is good alternative for that;

- inventor's mines will definitely surprise any unwelcome visitors.

Note: in order to shoot, your towers need to be equipped with a loaded weapon.

Using your Totem in a cunning way can be a great help too. You can cast The longest winter and freeze or wear out the besieging team. Using troll meat, mana stones or demonic stones you could keep your totem's mana at maximum and return fallen tribe members to the fight.
