History of the Partnership

John T. Hoggard High School has been involved in a partnership with Ikast-Brande Gymnasium (a gymnasium is the equivalent of an American high school) located in Ikast, Denmark since 2006. The purpose of this partnership is to help prepare students at both schools to succeed in a world with rapidly expanding global connections.

Students at Hoggard and in Ikast work together on interdisciplinary projects in subject areas including US History, English, Spanish, and AP Government. These collaborations involve students from both schools working together directly through the use of FaceTime, Google Docs, skype, email exchange, and other 21st Century communication technologies.

Exchange Information

Students from Ikast, Denmark will travel to Wilmington, NC as a part of a 10 day exchange program October 7-17, 2018. Danish students will attend classes at Hoggard High School and experience American culture through their Hoggard host family.

Rules and Conditions of Exchange:

    • Danish students are required to participate in all academic activities involved with the exchange
    • Students are subject to all of the rules and regulations of their home school system when abroad
    • Danish students may not participate in any Hoggard Athletic events (practices included)
    • Students are not permitted to operate motor vehicles (cars, motor cycles, etc.) while in their host country

Host Family Responsibilities:

    • The Purpose of the exchange is to provide an opportunity for Danish exchange students to experience the life of American high school students
    • Rules: review your family rules at the time the student arrives
    • Assist student upon arrival: help student become acquainted with home (bathroom, bedroom, laundry, kitchen, safety issues, and family schedule)
    • Bed: Provide a bed with linens and an area to store personal items. Exchange students must have their own bed.
    • Meals:
      • Host families provide meals for exchange students
      • Hoggard will provide exchange students with lunch during school days
      • Exchange students will not have money for “going out to eat.” Please keep this in mind when planning meals.
    • Transportation:
      • Provide transportation to and from school
      • Provide transportation to and from partnership activities

Exchange Student Information:

    • Danish students will arrive at Hoggard High School by bus Sunday, October 7, 2018. You will pick up your exchange student on the Hoggard bus ramp at a time to be determined.
    • Danish students will not be following the class schedule of their host student. All Danish students will report to Mr. Garner’s class at the beginning each school day.
    • Danish students will be traveling with two Danish teachers
    • On school days Danish students should come to school with their host student. Please make sure that your host student arrives to school on time
    • If a host students has a 7am or off-campus class, please make arrangements for your exchange student to arrive by 8:20
    • If a host student does not have a 4th period class, arrangements will need to be made for the Danish student to go home with the host student at the end of 4th period. If there are any problems please contact Mr. Garner
    • Danish students will depart from Hoggard for Washington, DC on Oct 17 at 6:00 AM. Please have exchange students at the Hoggard Bus ramp no later than 6:00 AM.
