Bob Cramer Memories on Verteran's Day 2010

Charles H. Cramer was born in the town of Harrisburg, Lewis County, and in 1835 came to this town with his parents. His father, Henry Cramer, purchased 90 acres of land of Alvin Dodge, a little north of the village of Tylerville, to which he subsequently added 65 acres. On this farm Charles H. was reared, receiving his education at the village school. At the age of 22 years he married Olive Jane, daughter of Timothy Bailey, of this town, and they had seven children, as follows Ida Louise (Mrs. Dr. O.H. Merrill), of Corinna, Me.; William H., a physician, of Copenhagen, Lewis County; Lansing J., a physician, of Newark, Wayne County; Charles W., who resides with his father; Lucinda S. (Mrs. W. H. Atwater), of Adams, this county; Charlotte M. (Mrs. George Twining), of Champion; and Nellie R., a school teacher in this town. Mrs Cramer died in 1867, and in 1869 he married Mary Jane, widow of John Hazel by who he had two children, Linea B., and Robert B., both of whom reside in this town. In 1848 Mr. Cramer was appointed captain of a company of light infantry organized under the old state militia law. He had lately had the office of assessor in this town, and also master of the grange — CHILD'S GAZETTEER OF JEFFERSON COUNTY TOWN OF RUTLAND

HENRY and LYDIA (BEIDELMANN) CRAMER, were from the Mohawk Valley and moved to Harrisburg, Lewis Co., NY, and then to the southern part of Rutland, Jefferson Co., near Tylerville when their son, CHARLES CRAMER, was a boy. They were farmers and Henry lived to be 84 years and Lydia to 93 years. CHARLES HENRY CRAMER was born in 1829 in Harrisburg, Lewis Co., NY and died at his home in S. Rutland in September of 1894. He attended public schools. A mechanical genius he invented numerous appliances. His later years were spent on the farm and as a member of Valley Grange of South Rutland. He served as justice of the peace and other local offices. Charles married JANE BAILEY, daughter of TIMOTHY and SARAH (BROWN) BAILEY. After Jane's death, Charles married 2nd MARY (CLEMENTS) widow of JOHN HAZEN. Children of Charles Henry Cramer and Jane Bailey: IDA L. CRAMER; married DR. In relation to this town the worthy surveyor reported as follows: "Along the river very rocky, and some very good land; very few streams emptying into the river. There is a very fine mill stream and various mill seats near the Black river, where it falls into the river; a fall of sixty feet, very curious indeed for mills. Along the river there are two falls of fourteen and six feet, which together with the rapids, that extend for a number of miles, make up a great fall in the river. The east line is very fine country and handsomely timbered with maple, beech, bass, ash, butternut, elm and some pine and hemlock; on the south line there is a pretty good country, and timbered with maple, beech, bass, ash, elm, birch and hemlock. Along the line on the west side, itis a very good tract of land, and well timbered. This town appears to be exceedingly good; all the waters are clear and good, and are formed altogether from springs which arise on the land. The town in general is most excellent soil, and very well watered, with large and small streams, and I think would answer any person's expectation for settling. Contains 27,604 acres." — History of the Town of Rutland , including Tylerville/South Rutland, where the Carleton G and Margaret M Cramer kids (Bob, Don, Nancy, Janice) grew up.
