SIDE LINES: The Wall Street Journal today celebrates "primo dried pastas" made in the USA, not imported.

One line is Flour City Pasta from Pittsford, NY, just outside Rochester. They use fine durum wheat "grown nearby."

I find myself recalling Rochester's history as "Flour City" because as pioneers ventured westward to settle in the midwest they made sure to top up their flour supply because a wilderness awaited them.

Rochester's mills didn't flourish for long, since wheat was planted in Ohio and Illinois and milled there. But Rochester already had become a city of high culture, including impressive gardens.

So some wag evidently started a movement to make Rochester "Flower City," which it still is today. [I thought the Journal needed "the rest of the story!] Bob.
