In my youth I watched my mother design and make our clothes. I found the experience tantalizing and impressive, so much so, I started my own creations. I remember cutting out pictures of "clothes" from the "Sears' Roebuck" catalog to use as paper doll clothes. Eventually, I would use Mother's scrap materials to make clothes for my dolls and sometimes for my sisters.
During my youth I had limited access to patterns, so I would take apart old clothes and use them as a pattern to make new pieces. My Mother was very particular about her sewing machine, so we were not allowed to use her machine. I usually hand sewed my articles.
I purchased my first sewing machine when I was a senior in college where I took on sewing projects for other students. I also sewed professionally for friends and family. I made blazers, dresses, doll clothes, shirts and pants. When my youngest daughter was in high school and a member of the drama club, I assisted with costumes. I also made her several outfits for her drama performances.
