I started playing basketball in the 5th grade and continued through my college career. When I played basketball, I played as a guard. Basketball teams were made up of six to ten members, with six players on the court at a given time. Unlike today, the team's defense and offense members were on the opposite ends of the court. Neither were allowed to cross the center line. The ball had to be passed to the offense across the center court line. I was the smallest and shortest member on the team.
Opportunities for female basketball players changed over time. When I first attended college there were no women's basketball teams, except as an intramural activity. However, I was actively involved in the basketball intramural program. My first year of teaching included coaching a girl's high school basketball team.
Today, I still have a love and admiration for the sport of basketball.
