Note: my work in this project is long over, but this content remains posted as a reference for those working on electronic portfolios at their institutions.
I give some consideration of electronic portfolios on my Research page. I use this section to pool resources about Google Apps and electronic portfolios. The information below is largely relevant to students developing electronic portfolios at Notre Dame, but I hope you find it amenable to adjustments for any school setting.
Included in this section is a sample portfolio for reference for students in CBE 20255, Fundamentals of Chemical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. Your portfolio was asked to be organized around the "six tools" of chemical engineering education at ND, as discussed in lectures and/or recitations.
An introductory page to your e-portfolio should provide an introduction to yourself! Feel free to customize the front page with a brief personal history, photos, and other Google Widgets. Also on your introductory page, explain the purpose of your portfolio and elaborate in some detail on your short- and long-term goals associated with being a student of chemical engineering at Notre Dame. Be sure to include all aspects of your life as "artifacts" for your abilities, strengths, and weaknesses.
The six tools ND's chemical engineering program provides are listed below. For each one, you should create a separate page so that you can link to your artifacts, and provide plenty of reflections - on that particular tool and what it means to you, on how that tool will affect you as a student or engineer, and your current self-assessment regarding that tool. Feel free to explore my sample portfolio contained here for ideas, then make your own!
CBE 20255 E-Portfolio Categories
The Notre Dame chemical engineer is envisioned to be a step ahead of his or her peers by exemplifying strengths in the following six categories. Click on a link for a brief description of the category, as well as my personal reflection, self-assessment, and goals related to each. Note that these are examples, and this is just one way to organize your portfolio for CBE 20255.
Definition and Understanding of Engineering Concepts
Understanding of Problems in a Societal Context
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
Organization, Initiative, and Self-Assessment
Independence, Leadership, and Creativity
Some E-Portfolio Resources
The below are links external to my portfolio here. The first link is a Notre Dame-only link related specifically to electronic portfolios for chemical engineering students (I had some hand in helping to assemble this site, though it is not my own). The other links are public resources related to electronic portfolios and Google Sites. Note, they are not checked regularly to confirm they are live.
ND CBE E-Portfolio Informational Site, created by Dr. Jessica Kuczenski (Century College; formerly ND assistant teaching professor in CBE), Dr. Joshua Enszer (UMBC; formerly assistant teaching professor in the College of Engineering), and Xiaojing Duan (educational technology associate in OIT). This project is still in development but accessible only through an ND student account.
Googlio Project, created by Alex Ambrose (advisor in the First Year of Studies)
ElectronicPortfolios.org, created by Dr. Helen Barrett (emeritus faculty, University of Alaska Anchorage; research associate, University of Oregon).
