"Transparent Tapes" are available under various trade names; 3M Scotch® Magic™ Tape, Transparent Tape, Office Depot store brand is called invisible Tape. It was Invented and introduced in 1961, it is the original matte finish tape. It appears frosty on the roll, yet is invisible on paper. This quality makes it popular for gift-wrapping. This type of tape can be written upon with pen, pencil, or marker; comes in permanent and removable varieties; and resists drying out and yellowing. This type of tape has the electrical property of being a very good insulator and also capable of generating static electricity and holding that charge for a long time. Not all plastic tapes will do this.
You probably have a roll of transparent tape on hand already. If not you can purchase a roll on a dispenser and after this project keep it on hand for wrapping birthday and Christmas presents. 3/4 inch wide is easier to handle than 1/2 inch. We did find some 3M Scotch® Magic™ Tape available at a dollar store for $1.00. We also purchased a no-name roll of transparent tape and tested it. It did work a little bit, but not very reliable.
Clear cellophane tape does not work very well. It seems like the adhesive it uses conducts the charge away quickly.
It would be a good idea to do the experiments with the tape found HERE.
