Jonathan (Jon) Wray is the Coordinator of Secondary Mathematics (Division of Instruction) in the Howard County Public School System. He has served as a primary and intermediate grades classroom teacher, gifted/talented resource teacher, elementary mathematics resource teacher, secondary instructional facilitator, curriculum / assessment developer, author, and educational consultant. A graduate of Towson University, he holds a Master's Degree in Educational Technology and Administrator II certificate from Johns Hopkins University.
His interests include the leadership roles of mathematics coaches / specialists, equity in mathematics classrooms, the use of engaging instructional models to deepen student understanding, and the strategic use of technology in mathematics to improve teaching and learning. While serving as director-at-large for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (2012-2015) he worked on NCTM's Emerging Issues, Membership, Strategic Planning, Website and Executive committees. He is also the project manager for the Elementary Mathematics Specialists and Teacher Leaders (EMS&TL) Project and is the past-president of the Association of Maryland Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMMTE), an affiliate of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). In 2007-2009, Wray served as president of the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM), after having served three elected terms on the MCTM executive board.
Over the past several years, Jon has been involved in a variety of professional experiences. He has worked as the project facilitator for two Title II grant-funded Mathematics and Science Partnerships Program (MSP) grant projects. Jon has served on the editorial panels of the NCTM's Teaching Children Mathematics print journal and ON-Math, NCTM's Online Journal of School Mathematics. Jon was appointed to serve on the NCTM feedback team, which during the writing process provided feedback to the lead writers of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for mathematics. Mr. Wray collaborated to build an iPad/iPhone app called "Common Core Look-fors (Mathematics)" by Splaysoft, which was a peer-collaboration tool for collecting, organizing, and sharing data related to the student implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice. In 2012, Jon co-authored Common Core Mathematics in a PLC At Work™, Grades K-2 and Grades 3-5 (Larson, Fennell, Dixon, Adams, Kobett, and Wray). In 2010, Jon co-authored two articles in NCTM's 72nd Yearbook, titled "Technology and the Mathematics Curriculum" and "Technology and the Teaching of Mathematics" with Jim Fey and Rick Hollenbeck. That same year, Jon also co-authored Developing Effective Fractions Instruction for Kindergarten Through 8th Grade: A Practice Guide, which was published by the Institute of Education Sciences.
Jon has served as a technology contributor to the sixth-tenth editions of the teacher education market's leading mathematics education resource, Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally by (the late) Dr. John A. Van de Walle, Karen S. Karp, and Jennifer M. Bay-Williams. Jon recently collaborated with Jenny Bay-Williams, Maggie McGatha, and Beth Kobett, to co-author Mathematics Coaching: Resources and Tools for Coaches and Leaders, K–12 (Pearson Higher Education, 2014). Wray and colleagues Francis (Skip) Fennell and Beth Kobett recently co-authored The Formative 5: Everyday Assessment Techniques for Every Math Classroom (Corwin, 2017).
Wray is a frequent presenter at various mathematics education and leadership conferences at the national, regional, state, and local levels. Jon is the father of three daughters and one son. His wife, Julie, is the Coordinator of Instructional Technology for the Howard County Public School System.
