I am a licensed psychologist and received a Ph.D. degree in 1991 from the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Oregon. As part of my training, I worked at the University of Tennessee Medical School where I assisted individuals, couples, adolescents, and families who were dealing with life traumas leading to emotional instability, chronic pain, and substance abuse. For many years, I worked at the University of Oregon with students dealing with a range of academic stressors, as well as those challenged by disabilities, chronic pain, learning and/or Attention Deficit Disorders, and returning older students retooling after injuries. I have been a therapist for more than 20 years. I enjoy working with individuals, couples, adolescents, and families to address issues such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and substance abuse.
My approach is predominantly cognitive/behavioral in nature. This means focusing on changing thoughts and behaviors to help regulate emotions. This structure allows me to effectively support my clients through changes they are attempting to make. Another important part of my approach is to make sure improvements due to these changes are recognized for the person. We work together to encourage healthy growth. I believe that most change comes from this person/therapist collaboration. About 1/3 of my practice are referrals from past clients, and the remainder are from other professionals and insurance companies.
When not working, I enjoy the outdoors - hiking, taking walks, canoeing, and tandem biking. I like to spend leisure time at the coast and the high Cascades lakes.
