Discussed the possibility of NWTA's involvement in the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky with artillery expert, Bill Anderson. NWTA (Northwest Territory Alliance) is an American Revolutionary War reenactment organization located in the Midwestern United States.

John A. McClellan will meet with Tom Hill, local historian and co-author of "Upper Sandusky (Images of America)," on September 18th, to beginning planning a 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky, possibly to be held June 9th, 2012.

08/02/2011

John B. McClelland's government-issued headstone has arrived from Columbus Marble Works (2415 Hwy 45 North, Columbus, Mississippi, 39705). It's an upright white marble headstone; 42 inches long, 13 inches wide, and 4 inches thick. It weighs approximately 230 pounds and contains light veining.

Since the government is not responsible for installing headstones in private cemeteries, it will be necessary to seek assistance with the installation of the headstone. Most likely, Frank R. Mulich, owner of Marshall's Monuments (50 East Fayette Street, Uniontown, Pennsylvania 15401), will install the headstone.

09/06/2011

Stephen House, of the Archaeological Society of Ohio (Muskingum Valley Chapter), is interested in investigating Upper Sandusky, which is likely to produce artifacts from the several skirmishes of the Crawford Expedition. Local historians in the Upper Sandusky area have mentioned that artifacts show up from time to time, when a farmer works the land, &c. They also seem to be in agreement that there hasn't been a proper archaeological investigation of the site.

09/13/2011

Marshall's Monuments installed John B. McClelland's government-issued headstone at Tent Presbyterian Cemetery today. Special thanks to Frank Mulich for all his help! The Foundation will now work with Troy Bailey of the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the SAR to plan a dedication ceremony to take place at Tent Presbyterian Cemetery. If possible, the George Washington Chapter of the SAR, and corresponding chapters of the DAR may participate as well.

John McClellan, Tom Hill, Steve House, and Ron Marvin met in Upper Sandusky to discuss the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky, which is scheduled to be held Saturday, June 9th, 2012. Most likely, the event will begin at East Elementary School, where several historians will be discussing the Crawford Expedition and various local historical societies will display Crawford related items. From there, the event will move to Stepping Stones Park where the NWTA and BAR will re-enact the infamous Battle Island skirmish. Afterward, a re-enactment of the Battle of Olentangy may take place at Colonel Crawford High School in North Robinson, pending approval by superintendent, Ted Bruner.

David Thompson, a Member of the Arthur St. Clair Chapter of the Greensburg, Pennsylvanis SAR, has offered to assist in planning a dedication ceremony for Lt. Col. John B. McClelland, to be held at Tent Presbyterian Cemetery in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on Saturday, May 19th, 2012 (230 years after Colonel Crawford's volunteers began gathering at Mingo Junction, Ohio).

It's likely that the "Battle Island" re-enactment will now take place at Harrison Smith Park, Near E. Wyandot Ave & N. 3rd Street (across from Karls Golf Course), Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351, in order to provide more parking. Also, indoor activities will likely take place at Upper Sandusky Middle School (390 W. Walker Street, Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351) to take advantage of theater-style seating in the auditorium.

The John B. McClelland Memorial Foundation has applied for a grant from the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation, in order to help cover re-enactment costs. The Bucyrus Area Community Foundation serves Bucyrus and Crawford County. Since the Battle of Olentangy re-enactment is scheduled to take place at either Lowe-Volk Nature Park or Unger Park, the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky is clearly in the best interest of the residents of Crawford County.

10/24/2011

Met with Harry and Belva Wilson of Tent Presbyterian Church to discuss the dedication ceremony for Lt. Col. John B. McClelland, to be held May 19th, 2012. Also discussed the possibility of applying for a government-issued marker for Lt. Col. John B. McClelland's son, John (1766-1849), who served in both the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 (2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812). Saw Lt. Col. John B. McClelland's memorial marker for the first time after having been installed by Marshall's Monuments.

Unfortunately, the Ohio Historical Markers Advisory Panel has rejected the Foundation's application for a $750 grant, which would have helped to offset the cost of a historical marker; even though an Ohio Historical Marker for John B. McClelland would have helped to develop awareness of Ohio’s role in the Revolutionary War, would have had both state and national significance, and would have been placed in a county with few historical markers. It would be interesting to know which marker applications received a grant.

The John B. McClelland Memorial Foundation has decided not to resubmit a grant application. The money that was allocated to the cost of an Ohio Historical Marker will likely be used to replace the headstones of John B. McClelland’s wife, Martha Dale McClelland (1741 - 1822) and daughter-in-law, Rachel Orr McClelland (1770 - 1843) at Tent Presbyterian Cemetery in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

10/26/2011

It's likely that the Battle of Olentangy re-enactment will take place at Lowe-Volk Nature Park (2401 SR 598, Crestline, Ohio 44827) or possibly Unger Park (1303 Nevada Road, Bucyrus, Ohio 44820), pending approval by the Crawford Park District.

11/01/2011

Submitted VA Form 40-1330, "Application for Government Headstone or Marker for Installation in a Private Cemetery" on behalf of Lt. Col. John B. McClelland's son, John McClelland (1766-1849), who participated in both the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

The NWTA has a scheduling conflict on June 9th. Currently, the Foundation is considering the possibility of rescheduling the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky for Saturday, June 2nd, 2011.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky will most likely begin at Upper Sandusky High School (800 N Sandusky Avenue, Upper Sandusky, Ohio 43351) where local historians will be discussing the Crawford Expedition and various local historical societies and museums will display Crawford-related items.

The Bucyrus Area Community Foundation has indicated that the board will review the Foundation's grant request in January. During the month of February one of the board members may request more detailed information. The board will then reconvene in March and decide whether or not to allocate the requested funds.

John Opre, a member of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of the SAR, and founding member of the French Creek Living History Association, has expressed an interest in 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky. The French Creek Living History Association is dedicated to preserving history from the French and Indian war era. Perhaps the Association will participate in the Battle Island or Battle of Olentangy re-enactment.

Bill Fisher, of the Crawford Park District, has indicated that this year's Living History Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012. The Park District works with a Revolutionary War re-enactment group called "Colonel Crawford's Company," which will re-enact the capture of Colonel Crawford. The Battle of Olentangy re-enactment, which was tentatively scheduled to take place at either Lowe-Volk Nature Park or Unger Park, will likely have to relocated.

01/11/2012

Bill Anderson, of the NWTA, and David Miller, of the BAR, have both expressed concern regarding the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky's timeline. Since the John B. McClelland Memorial Foundation will not have a definitive response from the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation regarding funding until the end of March, it may be necessary to focus on indoor demonstrations and exhibitions instead of a full scale re-enactment.

01/24/2012

Since the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation requires confirmation of an organization's 501(c)(3) status and the John B. McClelland Memorial Foundation's 501(c)(3) status is pending, the Northeastern Ohio Chapter SAR has agreed to act as a fiscal sponsor for the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Sandusky.

01/28/2012

02/09/2012

Frank R. Mulich, owner of Marshall's Monuments, has indicated that a government-issued headstone has arrived for John McClelland (1766-1849). Like Lt. Col. John B. McClelland's headstone, John McClelland's headstone is an upright white marble headstone; 42 inches long, 13 inches wide, and 4 inches thick. It weighs approximately 230 pounds and contains light veining. A dedication ceremony for both Lt. Col. John B.
