About Us

The John B. McClelland Memorial Foundation was established to preserve the legacy of John B McClelland (1734 - 1782), Revolutionary War patriot and founding forefather of the United States of America. Activities the Foundation may carry out include, but are not limited to:

• Paying tribute to John B. McClelland’s service and sacrifice, by erecting a memorial in his remembrance and/or applying for a historical marker from the State of Ohio, to be located at Wapatomica (Logan County, Ohio, about halfway between West Liberty and Zanesfield), where Major McClelland was captured, tortured, and executed by the Shawnee Indians. In July, 2010, the Ohio Historical Society and the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma placed a marker on a hill near the intersection of CR 5 and 29, indicating the location of Wapatomica. The current (2011) Ohio historical markers pricelist (http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/oahsm/pricelist.html) reads as follows: $2,000: Ohio Site Marker 1" text - same text on both sides, $2,075: Ohio Site Marker 1" text - different text on each side, $2,110: Ohio Site Marker 5/8" text - same text on both sides, $2,250: Ohio Site Marker 5/8" text - different text on each side, $1,700: Ohio Corporation Marker.

• Applying for a standard government headstone or memorial marker for John B. McClellan, whose remains have not been recovered or identified. If possible, the Foundation will attempt to install said marker at the Tent Presbyterian Cemetery, Georges Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where McClelland’s wife, Martha Dale (1741 – 1822) is buried.

• Developing awareness of John B. McClelland’s role in the American Revolutionary War.

• Soliciting funds, in order to receive, administer, hold, manage, accumulate, invest, and re-invest all contributions, donations, gifts, devices, and bequests received by or made to the Foundation. Endowments will be required to install a memorial and if possible, to host public events honoring the service and sacrifice John B. McClelland made for the United States of America.

• Upon completion of the memorial, possibly transferring ownership and/or management of the memorial to the Ohio Historical Society or other appropriate organization, at which time dissolution of the John B. McClelland Memorial Foundation is entirely likely. This will be at the sole the discretion of the Foundation, however.

• Expending, applying, and/or using funds in such a manner as to further carry out the general and specific purposes and functions herein described and declared; employing personnel, leasing or acquiring assets necessary to fulfill the foregoing purposes, including the right to apply for public licenses.

• Operating either independently or in conjunction with other persons, organizations, or institutions proper or desirable for accomplishing the purposes for which the Foundation is organized.
