GEM Lab was established in 2024. The name GEM stands for Get Everyone Moving OR Guiding AI in Education: Methods and Applications. To be honest, I chose the name not only for its meaning, but also because I believe every member of this team is a true GEM 💎

Jionghao Lin (PI)

Dr. Jionghao Lin is an Assistant Professor at The University of Hong Kong. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Monash University and completed his postdoctoral research at Carnegie Mellon University. His research lies at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence in Education, learning analytics, and human-centered computing, with a particular focus on designing AI-driven systems to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment. Dr. Lin has led and contributed to research projects on multimodal feedback generation, educational dialogue analysis, AI-assisted tutor training, and learning analytics. He currently serves as the Principal Investigator of an RGC Early Career Scheme (ECS) grant. His work has received multiple awards, including the Best Paper Award at HCII 2024, the Best Student Paper Award at EDM 2024, the Best Paper Award at ICMI 2019, the Best Demo Award at AIED 2023, and the Best Poster Award at GCCCE 2026. Dr. Lin is actively engaged in the international AIED and learning analytics communities. He serves as the Technology and Outreach Officer for the International AIED Society and as an Executive-at-Large Member of the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR). He also contributes as a reviewer for leading journals, including IJAIED, IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, and the British Journal of Educational Technology, and serves on the program committees of major conferences such as AIED, LAK, EDM, and ECTEL.
