Welcome to Dr. Jiangbo Lu's Homepage

I am the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of SmartMore CorporationSmartMore is one of the fastest growing vision companies providing all-in-one solutions for smart manufacturing and digital experience industries in the era of global economics.  It has quickly grown and established itself as a Unicorn within 18 months. We have proudly served hundreds of leading enterprises, including several Fortune 500 companies.  I am also an Adjunct Professor of South China University of Technology (SCUT) since 2021.

After spending several wonderful years at the Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC),  I have served as the CTO  &  later as the Chief Scientist of a fashion & new retail AI tech startup in Shenzhen during 2017 - 2019, where I led R&D to develop award-winning products such as AI virtual fitting mirror, 3D body scanning & measuring systems, as well as a series of leading 3D human body reconstruction and clothing technologies.

I am also an Adjunct Senior Research Scientist with the Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC), a research center of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in Singapore. I also hold a joint appointment with the Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL), UIUC.  At ADSC, I led and worked on a few use-inspired research projects that involve basic research, applied research, as well as commercialization of technology. I have served as the PI and Co-PI for several research or technology commercialization projects.

Some of my research work jointly with my colleagues and project students has led to a few Best Paper Awards (or nominations) as well as ICT awards, such as the AIT Best Paper Award in the IEEE ICCV'09 Workshop on Embedded Computer Vision together with K. Zhang.  Some technologies developed at ADSC have been licensed to a few Singaporean companies or led to start-ups, and three of my earlier projects (Magic Touch, Social AR and Home Plus) have been covered by the largest newspapers based in Singapore (e.g. The Straits Times).  Our Fast Global Smoother technique has been included in the official OpenCV release and was further applied in a few useful OpenCV functions. In March 2012, our live video cutout project demoed on-stage at the inaugural DEMO Asia 2012 conference won us a prestigious DEMOguru award.  And the “Cut Out the Background of Live Video, w/o a Green Screen” demo video on Youtube has received over 152,000 views since 2011.

I served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Circuits and System for Video Technology (T-CSVT) in 2012-2016. In this capacity,  I received the 2012 TCSVT Best Associate Editor (BAE) Award. I serve as a TPC member or a reviewer for many leading journals and conferences. I have also served as a Ph.D. Examination Committee Member for Ph.D. candidates from KU Leuven and UIUC in the past years. In 2016, I co-taught a graduate course on Special Topics in Computer Vision for School of Computer Science and Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

I received my Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in 2009. I received the B.S. (Honor Mixed Class Program) and the M.S. degrees, both in electrical engineering, from Zhejiang University, China, in 2000 and 2003, respectively. Before joining UIUC-ADSC as its first technical staff in Sep 2009, I had experience ever with IMEC (Leuven), Microsoft Research Asia (Beijing), VIA-S3 Graphics (Shanghai).

My research interests include computer vision, 3D vision, image/video processing, computational imaging, interactive multimedia applications and systems, and efficient algorithms for various architectures.  I hold 100+ granted patents. I am a Senior Member of IEEE since 2015.
