Marriage: According to the Word of God
We the members of Jehovah Holiness Church of the Living God believe marriage is define between a man and woman. According to Genesis 1:27-28: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him, male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” God created man in His image and then created a woman to accompany the man.
God gave them three blessings, which are to be fruitful, to multiply, and have dominion over all creation. To be fruitful is to grow in relationship with God, to multiply is to create a family by coming together as one in holy matrimony centered upon Him and have a beautiful family, to have dominion over all creation is by taking care of it as He will take care of you.
In Genesis chapter two and verses 21 thru 25, Jehovah God presented more details and was clear on this subject matter of marriage. Genesis 2:21-25 reads as follow:
“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”
These verses were concerning the marriage of a woman to Adam. “Marriage is honorable, but this surely was the most honorable marriage that ever was, in which God himself had all along an immediate hand. Marriages (they say) are made in heaven: we are sure this was, for the man, the woman, the match, were all God's own work; he, by his power, made them both, and now, by his ordinance, made them one. This was a marriage made in perfect innocence, and so was never any marriage since. That wife that is of God's making by special grace, and of God's bringing by special providence, is likely to prove a help-meet for a man. 2. From God, as his Father, Adam received her (v. 23): "This is now bone of my bone. Now I have what I wanted, and which all the creatures could not furnish me with, a help meet for me” (Blue Letter Bible).
In Saint Matthews chapter 19 verses 1-5, Jesus answered a question about divorcement with what he knew was true on how marriage is define. St. Matthews 19:4 and 5 states, “And he answer and said unto them, Have you not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?”
We believe the definition for marriage is a vow or contract between a man and woman or male and female. The Apostle Paul gave a clear definition on how marriage is defined in Ephesians 5:22-25, 28, 31, and 33:
“22Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
The institution of marriage is an ordinance instituted for the preservation of the church. This marriage bond must be stronger than the bond of nature. The son must quit his father and mother to be joined to his wife and the daughter forget her father and mother to cleave to her husband. “See how firm the bond of marriage is, not to be divided and weakened by having many wives (Mal. 2:15) nor to be broken or cut off by divorce, for any cause but fornication, or voluntary desertion. See how dear the affection ought to be between husband and wife, such as there is to our own bodies, (Eph. 5:28). These two are one flesh; let them then be one soul” (Blue Letter Bible).
Marriage has always been between a man and a woman since the beginning of time. We, the Pastor, Officers, and members of Jehovah Holiness Church of the Living God, believe marriage has only one definition, and it is define as a holy matrimony between a man and woman.
