The Java Lake Colony Lake Quality Committee is dedicated to ensuring that the Lake remains in as pristine a condition as possible. Their mission is to maintain a facility that is good for swimming, fishing, boating and pure enjoyment. To that end, Java Lake participates in the Citizens' Statewide Lake Assessment Program (CSLAP) so that we can effectively and inexpensively monitor the health of the lake. CSLAP reports the data from each summer's water sampling back to us in the spring. This report appears on the NYS Federation of Lake Association's website www.nysfola.org, as well as the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation website http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/26561.html.
The NYS Dept of Conservation (DEC) is making every effort to keep people informed about HABs (harmful algal blooms). We are currently creating some signage in regard to Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), as well. On the signs, we say that we will keep the community informed via a mention on our website, on the DEC website, and on the bulletin boards. Here is a link to the DECs HABS information website that provides detailed infomration about these potentially harmful blooms: :

The Committee conducts numerous surveys and tests of the water and the plant-life in and around the Lake. Our biggest concern is the possibility of an invasive plant species entering our lake and spreading rapidly in the nutrient rich environment. Every year we monitor plant growth using the Cornell University "rake toss" protocol the 3rd Saturday morning in August.
