The Practice of Statistics
Course Description
This class is designed to allow students an opportunity to take the equivalent of a college course in introductory statistics. Students will be introduced to the essential components of stats– collecting, analyzing, and making conclusions from data. The topics covered in this book cover the four broad conceptual themes set forth by AP Statistics standards– Exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference.
Prerequisites
Students must have successfully completed Algebra 2 in order to enroll in this course.
Technology
Students will have access to, purchased, or use a phone simulating the TI-84+ graphing calculators for use in class and at home. In most sections, the calculator will be used with regularity and incorporated throughout the lessons. All students will have access to a Chromebook for daily use as well. The classroom also has access to a computer lab in which Minitab statistical software will be incorporated and Google Sheets will be used on their Chromebooks.
Assessment and Assignments
Tests, quizzes, problem sets, activities and cumulative tests will be the major assessment tools used in this course. There will be tests following each Chapter as well as periodic quizzes to assess knowledge of the content. In addition, students will be doing projects and presentations demonstrating their knowledge of statistics. The problem sets will primarily consist of problems from the text, but will also include other assignments including minitab assignments, and other activities.
The current weight set be Powerschool for the semester is MP 1 - 45%, MP 2 - 45%, Exam - 10%. 2nd Semester will also be 45%-45%-10%
The following grading scale will be used for report card grades:
Late Work
If students have an excused absence and miss an assignment, they have 3 days to turn it in upon their return. In the case of an unexcused absence, or an assignment is turned in late, they can receive 75% as long as the test over that unit has not occurred. If later than the test, the most they can receive is 50%. Long-term absences will be handled on a case by case basis.
Attendance
The handling of absences/tardies will coincide with the school’s attendance policy.
Classroom Rules
