Course Overview
This course covers all the calculus topics listed in the AP Calculus (AB) Course Description. A few additional topics are pursued as time permits. The primary textbook is Calculus- Sullivan/Miranda. Supplemental sources will be used as well.
The main goal of the course is to prepare students to succeed at the collegiate level. In addition, a central focus will be in preparation for the AP Calculus (AB) exam. The approach of the course will emphasize the “Rule of Four”- numerical analysis, graphical analysis, analytic/algebraic analysis, and verbal/written methods of representing problems.
Prerequisites
Students must have successfully completed Pre-calculus in order to enroll in this course.
Technology
Students will have access to, purchased, or use a phone simulating the TI-84+ graphing calculators for use in class and at home. In most sections, the calculator will be used with regularity and incorporated throughout the lessons. All students will have access to a Chromebook for daily use as well. The classroom also has access to a computer lab in which Minitab statistical software will be incorporated and Google Sheets will be used on their Chromebooks. Winplot, Wolframalpha, Google Sheets, as well as other computer applications may also be used.
Assessment and Assignments
Tests, quizzes, problem sets, activities and cumulative tests will be the major assessment tools used in this course. There will be one or two tests each Chapter as well as periodic quizzes to assess knowledge of the content. The problem sets will primarily consist of problems from the text, but will also include other assignments including former AP questions and other activities.
The current weight set be Powerschool for the semester is MP 1 - 45%, MP 2 - 45%, Exam - 10%. 2nd Semester will also be 45%-45%-10%
The following grading scale will be used for report card grades:
Late Work
If students have an excused absence and miss an assignment, they have 3 days to turn it in upon their return. In the case of an unexcused absence, or an assignment is turned in late, they can receive 75% as long as the test over that unit has not occurred. If later than the test, the most they can receive is 50%. Long-term absences will be handled on a case by case basis.
Attendance
The handling of absences/tardies will coincide with the school’s attendance policy.
Classroom Rules
In general, the school code handbook is followed in this classroom. Food and drink are permitted as long as it is not a distraction.
PBIS
Classroom LEAD Matrix & Rewards
Cheating
Academic dishonesty in any form is not permitted. If a student is caught cheating, they will be given a zero without the opportunity to make up the points lost on the test or assignment.
Classroom Necessities
Students need a writing utensil, paper (spiral or 3-ring binder), and their Chromebook. It is recommended that they have a graphing calculator, but it is not required. If they are purchasing one, the TI-84 plus Silver Edition is ideal for statistics.
