I visited the Apple Store to see some of the new products the other day, and thought I'd share my thoughts about them with you.
The first thing I tried was the iPad Mini. People saying that the iPad Mini is a big iPod are wrong: it's a small iPad. Now, if you thing that the big iPad is just a big iPod, then the iPad Mini would be a small big iPod, so that's still up to your opinion.
The iPad Mini performed very well, although I had some responsiveness issues, which I believe to be the fault of the fact that the iPad Mini's software is, quite literally, the iPad 2's software, scaled down. The iPad 2's software was optimized for a bigger screen with more touch sensors, so the smaller iPad has some problems. Aside from that, I was pleased with the iPad Mini's overall performance.
Next up is the full iPad. It was noticeably faster than the iPad Mini, as it should have been with its new A6 processor. It performed just about twice as well in the Peacekeeper browser test as the Mini did.
I was generally displeased with the iPod Touch. The new feel makes the small device seem like a toy, with a brick-y shape and a weight so light that I would have said it was an empty display model had it not been turned on. The new "loop" was not attached, but when popping the mount out and back in it felt very low-quality, especially for Apple. I will say that I still enjoy using my older 4th generation iPod Touch, however, and those are still on sale for a hundred dollars less. The only thing the new iPod has that would compel me to get it is better cameras: a 1080p on the back and a 720p on the front, rather than the old iPod's 720p back and VGA front cameras.
The only new Mac I got to use was the new Mac Mini. Apart from the huge design difference, which is illogical to me, there was not much different about it: fast and powerful as usual.
One more thing to note: there is no longer a Mac Pro on display in my local Apple Store. Up to now, there was one sole model of the workstation tower out, but it has been replaced with an "express shopping" section. I'm expecting that it will either be back shortly after the holidays, or will be discontinued quietly at the time of Apple's next keynote.
